Religion and Social Class: The Disruption Years in Aberdeen (Routledge Library Editions: Sociology of Religion): summary, description and annotation

If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

This book, first published in 1974, shows how social class and origins in mid-nineteenth century Aberdeen were reflected in religious belief and observance, and how in turn this acted as a catalyst for change in society. Through a detailed analysis of this topic, particularly in relation to the Presbyterian denominations, the author directs fresh light on the emergence and development of the Free Church.

The Disruption in the Church of Scotland is examined within the context of changes which had taken place in the form of industrial production, whereby the city as a centre of manufacturing had replaced the domestic production of the countryside. The concomitant changes in the social structure, and the divisions which resulted within the old ruling families, are probed. The social patterns of adherence to the Established and Free Churches are analysed in detail, and the subsequent development of the Free Church is examined in terms of the social support it enjoyed in 1843.

For William McLaren
In memory of my father who died on 3 January 1963, aged 66 years
I should like to thank my friend and colleague, Malcolm Gray, who over a number of years has provided thoughtful assistance and fruitful discussion. Both he and Christopher Smout read and made useful comments on the original draft of this work. Needless to say neither is in any way responsible for the views expressed therein.
Other colleagues require mention as having aided, in many different ways, the cross-fertilisation of elements from history and sociology: Michael Flinn, John Hargreaves, Raymond Illsley, James Kincaid, Stuart McCalman, Peter Musgrave, Marc Nott, Andrew Sykes and Donald Withrington. Marc Nott has also given inestimable assistance throughoutfrom the preparation of the manuscript to the finished work.
I should also like to thank Cecile Fleming of the Department of Sociology for assistance in the preparation of the index.
The Directors of The Company of Scottish History Limited have kindly granted permission for the inclusion of a short section of my article Presbyterianism and the working class in a mid-nineteenth century city published in the Scottish Historical Review, vol. 46, 2, no. 142, October 1967.

Minutes of Aberdeen United Presbyterian

At the time of writing these records were still held by the appropriate kirk sessions in Aberdeen. All of the remainder were lodged at the Scottish Record Office, Edinburgh.
A Frankenstein to rend off their limbs of privilege and leadership.
More than any other urban centre in Scotland Aberdeen provided the best example of a true regional capital supported by and serving the needs of a large agricultural hinterland. Until the arrival of the railway in 1850 the seaport provided virtually the only outlet for the surplus produce of the surrounding counties. Communications by road were poor and, like the roads, the sea passage to Edinburgh150 miles to the southwas subjected to all the vagaries of the north-east climate. This relative isolation undoubtedly was an important factor in the development of Aberdeen as an important seaport serving the needs of the region and undertaking extensive trade with the Baltic, Poland, and the Netherlands. At first the exports were the natural products of the areaskins, furs, wool, and especially salmon, and the imports were manufactured goods of finer quality and kind than could be produced locally. Later, however, with the help and expertise of foreign artisans induced to settle in the area, the city developed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as a major exporter of woollen goods and hosiery produced in the north east and it was claimed that Aberdeen brought more money into Scotland than all the other towns.
