Preface
W hile most people I have spoken with over the years have a belief in some form of life after death, it seems amazing to me that there are so many others who believe absolutely nothing happens after death. They appear happy to accept that after dying the lights simply go out and we completely cease to exist in any way.
The idea that we can be born into such a wonderful world strongly indicates life is not a random event. The clockwork nature of the cosmos does not support the idea of chaos. Life on earth is not some kind of biological accident on a random planet in the solar system. There is a meaning and a purpose to it all.
Finding this meaning is something too few people concern themselves with, unfortunately. It is much easier to let life roll by, than to look at the deeper questions such as who are we, why are we here, where did we come from and where do we go after death?
Death is the great unknown, despite the fact it is our ultimate destination. Perhaps by not thinking about it we hope to somehow put off the inevitable, but there does come a time in life when we are forced to face our mortality.
Where we go after so-called death has always fascinated me. With an inborn acceptance of reincarnation, it has always made sense to me that there has to be something in between our multiple lives. But the big question is: What?
When we are born theres no instruction manual, we just have to pick everything up as we go along. The same is true of death. We each have to face it in our own way; we arrive with nothing and leave with nothing.
But is this really the case? Do we arrive with nothing? What about the life energy that fuels our existence, which fades and disappears when the body perishes?
Physics tells us that energy cannot be created or destroyed, that it continues even though it may transform into another form. But where does this energy come from, where does it go and how is it transformed?
To date, scientists have been unable to prove or even explain the existence of a non-physical life. However, I firmly believe that as science and spirituality are slowly drawing closer together in many areas, it will not be long before there are scientific breakthroughs in understanding the afterlife. The Noetic Science movement, an expanded science which acknowledges we are mind, body and spirit, is actively combining objective scientific methods together with humanitys deep inner knowing to explore the whole area of consciousness. Perhaps this is where the breakthrough will be achieved.
Even now, life after death is not a complete mystery. The existence of a world beyond the grave has been embraced by just about every civilization in recorded history. It is an integral part of many religions and spiritual beliefs and is rooted deep in our subconscious. Intuition and even logic also tell me it is part of our natural soul progression.
The term afterlife, which I am using in this book, can be contentious. Ezio De Angelis, one of the best mediums I have ever known, maintains that as there is no such thing as death, then life actually continues in another domain. This means there is not really an afterlife as such, but merely another sphere of existence.
For those with an open mind I invite you to join me as I present my research and experiences on the greatest journey of them all. The material in this book comes from my own journey in this lifetime, as well as insights from some of the finest writers and researchers into life after death. As the host and producer of RadioOutThere.com I have been privileged to interview these dedicated people over the course of many years.
It may seem a little far-fetched to some that after a long career in broadcasting and journalism I would be interested in the afterlife, let alone want to tap into it. Yet youd be surprised at the number of people who really want to know more. When it comes down to basics, no matter what we do for a living we are really all souls occupying a body, striving to survive and experience life as we know it on this small planet. The world of spirit for me is like any other mystery. It is just waiting to be explored and the answers are there for all those who seek them.
In the words of J.M. Barries immortal character, Peter Pan, To die would be an awfully great adventure.
Let the adventure unfold.
Part A
Dying to Go Home
A Life Cut Short
A young soldier shivers as the first glimmer of dawn filters across the battlefield. He clutches his rifle closer to his chest and checks the weapon for the umpteenth time to make sure it will not fail him as he anxiously waits for the order to attack.
Despite being early summer there is a chill in the dawn air. Though Brian is only nineteen this is not his first major battle, yet somehow today feels different. Survival is a day-to-day event. Shadowy memories of the many friends and fellow soldiers who have died in the last few months haunt his dreams when he is able to snatch an hour or two of sleep. The unrelenting barrage of artillery and weapons fire are his constant companion.
Brian misses Tosh, a cheerful cockney who lost his life a few months back. But try as he might the young soldier cant remember which battle took his best mate. They had fought side by side soon after arriving in France and, despite their very different backgrounds, had much in common. Tosh, a veteran at 21, had linked up with the Devons after his own regiment had been all but wiped out and soon took Brian, a fresh-faced soldier, under his wing. They shared many frightening experiences on the front line. Tosh had even got Brian drunk for the first time when they escaped for a few blissful days leave in a French village.
