CONTENTS
Being human is a strange and wonderful experience. We are big enough to fall like Newtons apple, yet our cells are small enough and work fast enough to qualify our inner workings as a quantum universe. We inhabit a borderland between Newtonian physics and the quantum model of reality, and we smoothly operate within these two realities. The body handles the details of the intricate workings of our 100 trillion cells without our conscious intervention. When we consider our spiritual nature, we encounter another borderland. The closer we come to an experience of oneness, or union, in the classic spiritual sense, the more our personal reality merges with the Divineexisting in an embrace at the threshold between flesh and spirit.
Each chapter of this book presents two aspects of our human nature that invoke and deepen the interfaces within us. The energies of the two thresholds resonate. Indeed, the whole universe exists in harmonic resonance. Atoms vibrate and their complex arrays of matter, from mountains to moons to mothers, move with those vibrations. The nine couplet practices in this book help us access some aspects of that universal resonance for ourselves. Although there are many more components to our innate nature, these nine practices enable you to enter the dance of harmony, find healing, and discover renewed vitality.
In that regard, each chapter title reflects a quality that resides naturally in us. These word pairs are intended to invoke, expand, and provide access to those qualities in a new way. The science in this book illustrates the interface where spirit and body meet, and there is mystery at many of those edges where knowledge reaches its current limits. Although there is an intuitively resonant meaning in each couplet, the experience of the universal qualities of each can deepen for you through practice. Think of this book as a guide to assist your exploration of nine practical approaches to health and nine practices that hold the potential for expanded awareness of your own healing nature. All the practices can be applied to self-healing and to assisting others.
Sooner or later we all face challenges with these biological, Newtonian bodies we have. Illness or injury may stop us in our tracks. Resonance becomes dissonance, leaving us to wonder what to do, where to find help, and why we are in such a state. In my work over the past four decades, I have asked these questions in the fields of science and spiritualityof indigenous healers in other parts of the world, colleagues, physicians, academics, and thousands of clients, for whom I have been a direct facilitator of healing. Out of that learning, these nine paired principles emerge as guideposts to support our health. Each set of pairs highlights skills that our healing nature can develop. Likewise, each chapter includes stories that illustrate the practical application of the couplets. Simple practices conclude each chapter and give us access to both worlds: our biology and our spirituality. These practices offer you the means to train yourself in states of consciousness that support robust health and provide a healing path when illness arises.
Resonance provides ways of knowing and living in our often puzzling world where we dance between the analytical, logical, data-driven concepts and the flashes of intuition, insight, and the unexpected. Both analysis and intuition can be effective companions, if not friends. I entered my personal dance far on the side of the analytical and data-based world of biophysics as a research scientist discovering secrets of the bodys cells. My highly sophisticated tools included electron microscopes, X-ray microanalysis, and Q-switched rapid-pulse lasers. Following a near-death experience I was plunged into the consciousness of the intuitive. Changes to how I lived and what I did with the gifts I discovered did not come all at once. At first I relied upon my familiar way of making decisions with strong focus and analysis. In more relaxed moments, I noticed that an intuitive idea would pop into my consciousness and those ideas were both useful and appropriate. These handy intuitive pops did not happen every time I needed to make a decision, however, and I learned that I could use all the skills of my mind. With time, the tools of analytical practice and intuitive practice ceased to be in conflict for me, and my life became a joyful dance that honored both.
During decades of use and refinement of these tools as a scientist and healing facilitator, I faced many challenges and struggled with a steep learning curve. Early in my quest, I took my questions to highly competent individuals in the United States, the Philippines, India, England, and Bali. They, too, understood the dance between logic and intuition, between states of consciousness in the ordinary world and in the expanded reality of spiritual experience. Ultimately we can learn to walk a middle waythe edge of the interface of bothwith delight, healing, and curiosity. Each day is a new journey on that edge and cannot be second-guessed. A renewed sense of wonder returns again and again, as we live a practical life in the luminosity of expanded awareness.
