FOREWORD
From the early nineteenth until the mid-twentieth century, challenges to the status quo regarding the role of women in society came largely from women and men outside the advanced study of religion. It was only in the 1970s that women biblical scholars began to engage in research and publication that could be defined as women's history and feminist interpretation. Throughout that decade such work continued to be suspect in academic circles as allegedly unscholarly, tendentious, and dangerous because of its potential for politicizing the university. It is a tribute to the work of many of the pioneers in this field that in the 1980s attitudes changed and such studies came to be recognized as making important contributions to knowledge about ancient women and texts and to contemporary understanding of the relations among texts, interpreters, and society. Just as feminist interpretation originated as a correction of the limitations of previously androcentric scholarship, in the 1980s womanist interpretation began to express new perspectives overlooked by white feminists.
