Ambition Is Essential
Many people would do fairly well in life if they only had somebody to keep stirring them up all the time, recharging them, enthusing them, constantly inspiring them; but they have no inclination to do this for themselves and hence remain in mediocrity. They depend on others for their motor power. When you give them a good talking-to, raise their hopes, and fire their ambition by telling them what is possible for them, you recharge them as one would an automobile battery. They run splendidly for a few days, and you think they are going to turn over a new leaf and keep their enthusiasm up, but all at once they collapse. Their power is gone, and they have to be recharged.
They seem absolutely incapable of self-locomotion. They lack initiative, self-direction. They have to be pushed about like the pieces on a checkerboard. When conscious of standing alone, with no one to lean on or to supply motor power, they are dazed; they do not seem to know what to do.
There are plenty of men and women who seem very ambitious to get on, but they lack self-propelling power. They wait for something to happen, for somebody to push them into a position, an influential friend to advance them.
These people slide along the line of least resistance. They would very much like success, but are afraid of the price. The successful life is too strenuous for them. There are too many difficulties in it, it requires too much sticking to it and hanging on in face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. These people go about with an indefinite idea that there is something in the world for them somewhere, and that by some chance it will come to them if they only wait long enough. In the meantime, they are content to be propped up and supported by others. This lack of self-reliance, this dependence on outside power, is fatal to all advancement and achievement.
Sam L. was frustrated. He told his career counselor that hed never expected to have to look for a job. I always thought my father or my uncle would hire me in their businesses. Even after their business failed, I assumed that with all of the contacts my family had, Id be hired by one of them. ' .
Sam had never considered doing something for himself. All of his life, things were done for him. But despite his good education, for the first time he had nobody to depend on but himself.
Sam had to face up to the real world. By working closely with his counselor over several weeks, he was able to evaluate his strengths and weaknesses, the areas in which he was happy and those he disliked, the job opportunities in a variety of areas, any additional training he needed to obtain the kind of job he would like, and most of all to train his mind to accept that he must be self-reliant, that he could not rely on anyone but himself if he was to become a truly well-integrated human being.
You dont, as a rule, rise by accident from the slums and obscurity to wealth, honor, and fame by saving someone from drowning at the seashore or by meeting a millionaire who likes you. Remember a simple truth: You will always demonstrate your character, your state of mind. Character is destiny. Character is the way you think, feel, and believe, the spiritual values you have enthroned in your mind, the integrity and honesty that you have established there. These qualities pay dividends.
Techniques for Overcoming Negative Thinking
The ideal way to rid yourself of unwanted emotions is to practice the law of substitution. Substitute a positive, constructive thought for the negative thought. When negative thoughts enter your mind, do not fight them; instead, just say to yourself: My faith is in all things good. You will find the negative thoughts disappear just as light dispels the darkness.
At times you will find your mind falling back into its old habits
of fretting, fussing, worrying, and recounting the verdicts of others. When these thoughts come to your mind, issue the order Stop! My thoughts are the way I feed my subconscious. Whether it be a job-related or a personal matter, do this a hundred times a day, or a thousand times, if necessary.
Many people when faced with a catastrophe lose hope and become negative about everything. But with others a catastrophe leads to strength and heroic motivation even under the most dreaded of conditions. Susan and Sherman Goldsteins Marthas Vineyard (Massachusetts) inn was destroyed by fire in December of 2001. They were so challenged that they didnt have time to make dinner for a month and had to be fed by friends and given living space by another business owner.
They did not let this disaster dominate their lives. They chose to reopen the inns restaurant first, to maintain a presence in the town, and during restorations they wrapped their destroyed inn with a giant banner, reading, When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. The Goldsteins used the fire as an opportunity to transform a very modest inn, whose rooms were old and small, into a top-shelf facility renamed Mansion House, catering to a larger clientele. Susan Goldstein says the fire that destroyed so much actually helped them to reach a new level. Their positive thinking enabled them to rebuild and start afresh..
Visualization
Visualize just how you will deal with the challenges you face each day. If you are going to make a sales presentation or prepare a report for a management meeting or engage in any productive activity, plan out in your mind just what you will say, how you will say it, what steps you will take to achieve it. Rehearse it over and over again in your mind. It will enter deep into your subconscious; it will permeate every cell of your brain. You will become committed to success and when you actually are selling to that customer,
standing before that management group, or engaging in the activity, your subconscious will take over and you will achieve the desired

Thank Goodness Its Monday
The expression TGIF, Thank goodness its Friday, is now accepted as the typical attitude of most American workers. We look forward to our weekend and its respite from our jobs and careers. There is nothing wrong with this, as we all should rejoice in our days of rest. However, ambitious and successful people look forward just as much to resuming their work on Monday.
Many people talk about blue Monday. These people are already resigning themselves to their fate and beginning to shut down their lives. Monday then comes with a certain sense of resignation: On Sunday they were consciously decreeing their future, and their subconscious responded accordingly. In all probability, they didnt even know that they had planned ahead and had thus created their fate. If you replace this resignation with positive thoughts about the work you are doing and anticipation of its challenges and opportunities, you will eradicate those Monday morning blues.
SUM AND SUBSTANCE
Positive thinking starts with understanding the power of the subconscious.
Take control of your career. Dont let your boss, your coworkers, or anyone else steer your career-ship. Never forget that you have the internal power to overcome negative influences that could stymie your career growth.
There is nothing else so helpful as the carrying of an optimistic, expectant attitudethe attitude which always looks for the best, the highest, the happiestand never allowing oneself to get into a pessimistic, discouraged mood.
Never finish a negative statement; reverse it immediately and wonders will happen in your life. Your subconscious mind, being creative, will then equally proceed to create the attributes in your life that you have earnestly decreed.
Visualize just how you will deal with the challenges. you face each day. If you are going to make a sales presentation or prepare a report for a management meeting or engage in any productive activity, plan out in your mind just what you will say, how you will say it, what steps you will take.
