Every animal can communicate to each other. They can communicate through sounds, actions, sense of smell and others. However, humans are the only creatures created by God who can communicate using words. A system of words is called language. Language can either be through speech and letters or through signs.

Talking for humans is as natural as breathing, so natural that most of the time, we do not think too much on what we say. However, what we say affects us and the people around us. We tend to underestimate the power of words, and we should n t. We should learn to account everything that we say.

This book is about learning to harness the power of words to change your life. Every chapter is an aspect on how you can use your words to better yourself and the people around you. After each chapter is a section containing questions that will allow you to reflect on the words that you use every day.

I hope that God will use this book to speak to you and change how you use your words.

Chapter 1: The Impact of Words

There is an old adage that says , Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me . While words may never hurt someone physically, these can hurt a lot more than sticks and stones can.

Words are the building blocks of civilization. Knowledge and ideas are relayed through words. Stories and legends are told in words and are passed on from generation to generation. Words become even more powerful when they are written. When words are written, they leave an impact to every person who has read them.

Words convey our emotions. It is only through words that we can articulate what we feel. Brilliant speakers and writers became famous because they can describe emotion through words. Lovers express their deepest feelings through poetry and letters and at times, people become sick and lonely because they fail to say what is in their hearts.

It is also through words that we deliver our message. We can say what we want to say because we have the words to show our meaning.

Words can unite people towards a cause, but words can also divide them. Words can heal people, but words can also destroy them. It is not a question on the degree of impact words can have, as we learned that the power of words is a lot stronger than we realize. It is how we want to use its power. It is up to you to decide - what kind of impact do you want your words to have. Do you want to use it for good or not?

In the rest of the chapters of this book, you are going to know more about the power of words and how to use it for good. As you begin to take each word that you utter into account, your life will start to change. You will be at peace with yourself and the people around you, and you will experience increased happiness.

Choose your words to better yourself. Choose your words to build up people and not to destroy them. Choose your words to make society a better place. The choice is yours to make.

Questions for Reflection:

Can you remember anything a person said that made the most impact to you? How has it made an impact to you?

Chapter 2: How to Tame your Tongue

Our tongues are capable of spewing up vile and wicked things. The Bible says tha t But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison . (James 3:8) However, we have to tame our tongues and we can only do that by believing in the power of the Holy Spirit to help us to train our tongue.

You have to control your tongue from:

Saying profane words. Teenagers today think that saying dirty and inappropriate words is cool. This belief is further perpetuated by media through the songs that they hear, the books and magazines that they read and the movies that they watch. However, saying these words is the opposite of coolness. They are the mark of an impolite and uneducated person. If you want to look cool, stop saying these kinds of words.

Saying the name of the Lord in vain. A lot of people say , Oh my God ! o r Jesus Christ ! as an expressio n so often that it becomes normal to hear it. Doing so smacks of irreverence to the most Holy God. The name of God should only be uttered for worship, praise and reverence.

Spreading gossip. Backbiting and dispersing gossip have the power to destroy the person involved. However, they can also destroy the people spreading them. When you spread gossip, you are putting yourself too low. Avoid gossiping.

Saying discouraging words. When you have nothing better to say, it is better not to say anything at all.

Bragging. It is human nature to try and look better for other people. However, being proud always turns other people off. Strive to be humble and let other people praise you.

Lying. We lie so that we can look good to other people or remove ourselves from sticky situations. However, when our lies are uncovered, we end up looking more foolish and our situations become stickier. Stop lying and start being honest. If you are tempted to lie, bite your tongue.

Spreading dissention. There are people who want to divide other people. They want to fight and be at odds with everybody. Do not create division. It is better if people are at peace with everyone.

Questions for Reflection

What there a moment wherein you said something that you know you should n t have said? How did you feel?

Chapter 3: How to be Happy

Happiness is something that we all strive to have. Words have the power to make us and other people happy.
