A Caring Approach in Nursing Administration: summary, description and annotation

This work by Dr Jan Nyberg is guided by a lifelong career of administration and management that is informed by deeper human dimensions of caring, and more lasting approaches to change than quick-fix, economic take overs. Jan Nyberg, an experienced nursing administrator, scholar, and educator, knows another way-from the inside out rather than the outside in. She brings forth her wisdom and knowledge, experiences, and insights so that others may now grasp another way to transform systems for delivery of human caring and healing. This work informs, instructs, and inspires; it invites nurse leaders and other health administrators to reach for what might be, rather than succumbing to what already is.

This book is dedicated to all the nurses that have passed through my life. The staff nurses who do the real work of caring, nurse managers who care for the staff and juggle a thousand responsibilities, nurse administrators who walk the fine line of supporting caring nursing within the bureaucracy, and nurse educators who taught me and allowed me to teach them.
My mentor, Dr. Eunice Blair, has been inspirational every time I have seen her. She helped me grow personally and professionally and was the reason I ever thought I could be a nurse administrator. Dr. Phyllis Schultz was my Ph.D. advisor, and she made it a mission to get me through school. With her kindness and high expectations, she brought out the best in me.
Finally, I dedicate this book to Dr. Karen Miller, who has been my closest nursing colleague and friend for fifteen years. I was her boss once and she was my boss later, but more than that, we have shared our vision and direction of nursing. After I became disabled, it was Karen who quietly insisted that my contribution to nursing was not ended. This book contains our shared views, and I thank her for helping me to get it done.
