Acknowledgments
I am grateful to my department head, Eric Dorn Brose, and to Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Thomas L. Canavan for their support in making this book possible, and to the students in my Latin American history classes at Drexel University, whose enthusiasm made it worthwhile. As I expanded my use of feature films to teach history, I benefited from countless discussions with colleagues. When I was unable to convince anyone else to edit a book like this at the 1992 meeting of the Conference on Latin American History in Washington, DC, I decided that I would have to do it myself. Portions of the manuscript were presented at meetings of the Latin American Studies Association (1995), the Conference on Latin American History (1996), and the fifth Studies in Latin American Popular Culture Conference (1996). Without the opportunity for real interaction that such occasions permit, scholarship in general would be diminished and, certainly, this book might not have been possible. Thank you to all who offered advice, suggestions, criticism, and encouragement.
