I believe in aristocracy, thoughif that is the right word, and if a democrat may use it. Not an aristocracy of power, based upon rank and influence, but an aristocracy of the sensitive, the considerate, and the plucky. Its members are to be found in all nations and classes, and all through the ages; and there is a secret understanding between them when they meet. They represent the true human tradition, the one permanent victory of our queer race over cruelty and chaos. Thousands of them perish in obscurity, a few are great names. They are sensitive for others as well as for themselves, they are considerate without being fussy, their pluck is not swankiness but the power to endure, and they can take a joke.
E. M. Forster, Two Cheers for Democracy

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The authors of the biographies in The Human Tradition in Latin America for the nineteenth and twentieth centuries realized our goal of making the region's history have meaning in terms of individual lives. These life histories gave texture, example, humor, and sorrow to the great events of the past two centuries. In sum, the authors used vignettes to put a human face on the past. In this new, combined volume, our selections reflect a need to give general coverage to the era since independence, to the diversity of nation-states, and to the human dimensions of gender, generations, ethnicity, class, and rural-urban origins. Our choices have been difficult indeed, and we urge readers unfamiliar with the two volumes from which this collection is drawn to consult them and to read the biographies not included here. We have thanked personally all of the authors, but we want to express in print our appreciation for their helping us make the history of Latin America come alive.
