The Third Wave of Modernization in Latin America: Cultural Perspective on Neo-Liberalism (Jaguar Books on Latin America): summary, description and annotation

If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

The term modernization has been used extensively in Latin America since the post-World War II period to describe the promotion of Western world views and consumption patterns. The term is being used in the 1990s in conjunction with the neoliberal pressure placed upon the region to develop modern states and markets to be integrated into the world economy. This text offers an anthropological perspective on Latin Americas most recent phase of modernization and its costs to social relations and traditional ways of life. Because peoples lives are placed at center stage, a human dimension is brought to the study of the modernization process. Written in accessible language, The Third Wave of Modernization in Latin America analyzes a wide variety of themes, from rural and urban poverty to environmental and cultural identity issues. Each chapter, written exclusively for this volume, focuses on a particular country. Included are case studies of organizations that have been influenced by current neoliberal policies; critical perspectives on restructuring, free trade, and modernization; an overview of Latin Americas recent past to explain why neoliberalism has become a predominant policy in the region; and analyses of the environment, womens issues, and native communities in the context of modernization. The book is divided into the following sections.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The exigencies of doing fieldwork do not usually fit well the demands of an edited volume, and I want first to thank the contributors to this volume for their just-in-time production of high-quality papers and their prompt responses to my endless queries, despite being in various parts of the world during the process. I would also like to thank Bill Beezley for his invitation to consider organizing a book on modernization. His support throughout the project has been much appreciated, and I hope that the product has not steered too far from what he had in mind. Thanks to Nicole Nol for her computer expertise and editorial assistance. For their intellectual sustenance on Latin American issues (anthropological or otherwise), I want to thank Tanya Basok, Denis Baranger, Mario Boleda, Graciela Dinardi, Carlos Larrea, Ignacio Llovet, Blanca Muratorio, Lucia Salamea, Gabriela Schiavoni, Pati Tomic, and Ricardo and Camilo Trumper. For financial aid, thanks go to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. Alan Hall and Rachel Phillips Hall deserve special mention for their support and good-natured acceptance of my many absences. Their patience and humor remind me about the important things in life.
