Summary
Vishen Lakhianis The Code of theExtraordinary Mind provides guidelines on how people can helpthemselves find a more purposeful and exceptional way of living.Lakhiani founded the Mindvalley, a prominent academy that focuseson personal development. He has culled his wisdom from hisassociations with a broad mix of business leaders, spiritual gurus, and media tycoons among others.
Lakhiani is a computer engineer and is quitefamiliar with the process of breaking down components of a programand putting them back together making a better version. He adoptedthis paradigm in the concept of personal growth by presenting a wayof life which initially involves a systematic breaking away fromconstricting social and cultural patterns and proceeds to pinningdown ones heart desires and focusing on a profession that willmake a mark in the world as large as a version of a trulymeaningful existence.
We are a product of our environment. Oursocial and cultural norms or culturescape tell us how to do thingsfrom loving to living to working. For most of us, these normsinfluence our decisions and our choices. For a fuller life, thereis a need to break from a traditional way of thinking. Largely,Lakhiani believes if people can only change the way they do things, they will open the door to a broader and more purposive way of lifewhere one does not simply exist. This leads to genuine happiness asbetter persons that produce a lasting legacy for mankind.

Analysis of Core Concepts
Core Concept 1
Exceptional persons do not allow themselves to becaged in by traditional beliefs.
Most of our practices and beliefs, which arehanded down to us by family and society, significantly influencethe way we think and do things. For most of us, it becomes acomfort zone further exacerbated by the fear of breaking familytraditions.
Conformity is a given in most societies.Civilization and Its Discontents, a book written in the 1930s byprominent psychologist Sigmund Freud, discusses the pressures ofsocial norms on primal human instincts. Freud raises the idea thatpeople use standards that are not valid for measuring power, success and wealth for themselves and others since these measuresdont apply to what is truly valuable in life. While conformityassures order and continuity of social institutions, however, oncethey are ingrained in people it translates into peoples inabilityto evaluate choices particularly on what truly matters to them. This culturescape or the sum total of norms and beliefs that arehanded down to us are accepted as normal and therefore unopposed. There is a need to break from this culturescape. It is a crucialstep in learning other liberating values and beliefs.
Core Concept 2
Exceptional persons reject standards of behaviorthat they are programmed to adhere to.
If we are not aware of these rules which havebeen handed down to us, it would take a long time to realize howlargely they have shaped our existence. We are most familiar withthe pattern where children take up professions of their parents.Take, for instance, a girl who is born incredibly creative, butthis talent is stifled since she opts to be a lawyer just like herfather. However, she turns out as a mediocre lawyer, not becauseshe did not develop the skills or she lacks the aptitude forlawyering, but because her heart was not into what she was doing.Eventually, she leaves her profession and pursues art her realcalling, and becomes a successful artist. Finally, she realizesthat she pursued lawyering as a career because at the back of hermind was her fathers rule: there is no money in art. While thetime she spent as a lawyer is irretrievably gone and wasted, shemakes her new-found wisdom work for her in further identifyingother patterns in her life that limit her to become fully what sheis.
