GENERAL OVERVIEW
Strength Finder2.0: The Next Generation
Every morning you wake up, do you actuallydo what's best for you? Maybe not. It happens almost all the time.Despite your desire to do the things you love, you dont end uprealizing your talents.
The purpose of learning at its most basiclevel is to help you become someone you are not. For instance, ifyou don't have a talent for numbers, but you join a class for mathor other numbers-related course, you will be compelled to learn itso you can pass or acquire a degree.
Man has always been programmed to spend timefixing weaknesses and shortcomings instead of reinforcing hisstrengths.
Gallup introduced a set of online tests in2001 as a way to help people discover their talents. It sparked aconversation worldwide and has helped thousands of individualsdiscover their best talents.
In this second version, Strength Finder 2.0,you get an improved version of these popular tests. It alsoincludes 34 themes to help you learn how to apply yourstrengths.
Finding your strengths is a primary way ofimproving your life and the lives of those around you. In additionto finding your strengths, you need to take action. Thesedevelopmental goals need to be personal and something that alignswith your goals and your job. Once you have that done, it'simportant to share your thoughts and plans to those around you, like family, friends, co-workers and even bosses. If someone elseclose to you is doing the same thing, then it's important to assistthem. Doing so will help create a positive and productiveenvironment where you can thrive in your plans for change.
PART I:
HOW TO FIND YOUR STRENGTH: AN INTRODUCTION
Our culture praises overcoming difficultiesand weaknesses in almost all aspects of our lives. Much of whatsurrounds us, including books and movies, are peppered with storiesabout overcoming weaknesses and beating the odds. We idolizeindividuals who succeed even if they struggle to do so, whereasthose who actually use their inherent talents succeed easily. Forthis reason, many individuals end up thinking of these people asheroes. The appeal of achieving the American dream is to overcome avariety of challenges before succeeding.
The Misguided Maxim
Have you ever heard this? "If you try reallyhard to the best of your ability, you can become anything you wantto be."
Almost every person believes this maxim.Salesmen think that as long as they put in the effort, they can befantastic salesmen. If someone is promoted to management level,he/she usually tries to gain more information by buying managementbooks, by grilling fellow managers and makes it a point to leavethe office last to finish work, even if it's at the expense ofspending time with family. After a few years, these people realizethat they don't have the innate capacity to be a leader or to trainother people. The chance for them to provide better value andbigger support for the company would have been realized had theyremained in the sales position where their natural abilities fitthe best.
Majority of offices and organizationsnormally train people for distinctive roles where status, additional income and responsibility are greater as opposed toletting them remain in a role or career path that fits theirtalents.
This is also true in classrooms as well asin homes. Parents in the United States, regardless of theircultural upbringing, often focus on a student's lowest grade. Bothparents and teachers praise excellence, opposed to putting emphasison the childs potential for learning.
The simple truth is that someone who is notgood at numbers will not pursue or thrive in a career as anaccountant or a statistician. In the same way, those withoutempathy will not be able to console an irritated customer and beseen as sincere.
The Gallup research discovered that everyindividual has a potential to succeed in certain areas, but themain key is to build on whom you are -- even though you may not beclose to what you want to be, but you could be more of whom youare.
It's the same way in business where talentis a large factor. Managers and CEO positions require a totallydifferent skill set; and if you're someone whose skills lie in adifferent area, then you probably wont succeed. As a result, you'll end up just trying to tread water while in a position.
Your Strength Zone
The Gallup studies revealed that talent canbe used effectively in different roles regardless of position whether it is housekeeper, clergyman, CEO or even governmentofficial. Every major industry has someone who soars with all theirstrengths in each role.
For those who want success, it's crucial toremember that the chance to develop your strength is more crucialthan gaining a title, a more important role or even greater pay. With today's talent-driven climate, knowing your strengths andactively developing them is important to know where you will fitin. If you find yourself in a position where you are not in yourstrengths zone, it's likely that you will be unhappy with your job.If you don't have a chance to use your strengths, there are severalthings that could happen:
You will hate going to work
You won't have a good relationship with yourco-workers or colleagues
You will treat your customers poorly
You will complain that your company ismiserable to work for
