Overview

Did you once deliver anawful elevator pitch and felt embarrassed afterwards? Have youperformed so poorly at an interview that you were sure that youwouldnt get the job? Presence is written by Amy Cuddy, a professorat Harvard Business School. It is book that motivates its readersto improve the way they perceive themselves instead of stressingabout the impressions made about them by others. Presence tells itsreaders to become more self-confident through accessing theirpersonal power. This is one way a person can be tougher in facingfrightening situations like business pitches, interviews and evenbreak-ups. Being present can help you be a better public speakerand more comfortable when delivering presentations. It can alsohelp you to be a better listener which is an important in anyrelationship.

Heightening your presence can be a goodsolution for avoiding paralyzing self-doubt. Competent men andwomen are often afflicted with impostor syndromethe thought thatthey dont deserve their accomplishments even though they have beenvery successful.

Life changes can make people feel helpless.Even if opportunities do present themselves, many people areunwilling to take them because of the fear of failure. One mustaccess his/her personal power to tackle these confidence issues.Studies have demonstrated that a person can increase hisself-confidence by merely remembering an event where he feltconfident and powerful.

We can use our bodies to exude confidence.Lets consider the Haka: a war dance done by the Mori people ofNew Zealand. The rugby team, the All Blacks, performs this wardance prior to every match. They do this in an attempt tointimidate and frighten their opponent. This also has a positiveeffect on each member of the team. Performing the ritual gives eachof them a greater feeling of camaraderie and brotherhood. The morea person grows into the space that surrounds him, the more power heexudes. Alternatively, the more a person shrinks, the more heexhibits powerlessness.

A person only needs small adjustments to havea greater presence like remembering to smile or by visualizingpowerful moments. People can better face their greatest obstacleswhen they feel powerful. You can be efficient in any area of yourlife if you focus on being present.

Analysis

A lot of smart, sensible people have beenovercome by anxieties. It does not matter if they spend countlesshours rehearsing their presentation, worrying can send all thathard work down the drain. Lakshmi Balachandra, a researcher, analyzed 185 video presentations targeted to business investors andhe discovered that the most prepared people were not the likeliestto receive funding. And it was not the individuals that had themost impressive work histories. Rather, it was the presenters whoappeared the most passionate in their business -the people whobelieved in themselves and the products they were presenting.

Investors will know when presenters are notcompletely dedicated to their project and there are signs thatidentify this. The capitalists only wanted to listen to presenterswho believe the stories they tell. Lets take a look at some of theTV ads by Hair Club for Men, a hair replacement brand. In one ad,Sy Sperling said, Im not just the president of Hair Club for Men,Im also a client! His testimonial came coupled withbefore-and-after photos. The pictures depicted his journey frombeing bald to having hair.

Sperling exhibited true presence bydisplaying his trust in the service. Others would have beenhumiliated for being depicted in an ad for hair replacement, butnot Sperling. His confidence in the ad made the brand very popular. He was a guest on talk shows; he even merited a parody on SaturdayNight Live! The company was sold for $210 million in 2005. That wasa company whose value sky-rocketed because of one mans attitude, personality, and humor. Sperlings recommendation influenced a lotof people to use their services. His confidence single-handedlymade the company a huge success.
