INTRODUCTION
From scoring against Brazil in the World Cup to beating the Austrians at the Winter Olympics slalom, there will always be a spirit of competition that compels men to keep up with their counterparts in the rest of the world.
And in no arena is this sense of one-upmanship more exaggerated than when we're talking about sex. Our competitive natures can't stand the idea that some guy across the globe is getting more sexor better sex!than we are. Not that throwing down the gauntlet is such a bad thing; after all, the best competitions spur all contestants to fulfill their greatest potential and attain greatness. So it's in that spirit of healthy competition that we offer Men's Health Guide to the Best Sex in the World, the first instructional sex book to carry the Men's Health brand.
Now, an instructional sex book is nothing newthe oldest ones in the world can be traced to China 5,000 years ago. But this one is different: It's based on an exclusive international Men's Health Global Sex Survey that interviewed 40,000 men in 42 countries to figure out who's having the most sex, the hottest sex, the longest sex, and the wildest sex. In all, it was one of the largest sex surveys of men ever undertaken. And just to make sure those polled were being honest, we supplemented their responses with interviews of women and sex experts in more than a dozen countries.
And so the collective sexual wisdom of the world, the best practices of men from all over the globe, have been collected here for your perusal. Each chapter addresses one concern that men have about relationships and sex, revealing the world leaders in that area as determined by the survey. Citing input from sex therapists, sociologists, and international research, each chapter starts by exploring why a particular culture has reared such skilled lovers and leads into direct, practical, and surprising tips from international experts, explaining how you can have the world's best sex, no matter what country you are in.

We noticed a couple of things in writing this book, and one of them we'd like to share right up front. One of the most interesting things about looking at erotic art and ancient sex manuals from other cultures is seeing how much fun the guys seemed to be having with their partnersand not just when they were getting jiggy with it. For instance, when looking at Chinese and Japanese pillow books, take note of how many props the couples have surrounded themselves with. There are musical instruments for romantic serenades, board games to play, books of poetry to read aloud, erotic pictures to look atin other words, all the things people used to entertain themselves before Xbox and TiVo.
In fact, there is a strong sense of play in almost all ancient sexual traditions, and certainly in most sacred ones. For instance, according to Jina Bacarr, author of The Japanese Art of Sex, geishaprobably the paramount symbol of seduction and sexual knowledge across all cultureswere trained in a variety of traditional arts, including music and conversation. They were also expert game players. Bacarr tells of a variation on strip poker in which a geisha raises the hem of her gown slightly with every turn, opening her legs ever wider until her companion can no longer concentrate on the task at hand.
It would be a shame if that sense of play were lost to the ages. Lovemaking has been afflicted by one of the worst diseases of modern timesit has been taken too seriously, as if it's a particularly difficult science project, says British expert Graham Masterton, former editor of Penthouse and Penthouse Forum and author of The Secrets of Sexual Play.
How did we get here? Masterton has a theory: While the sexual liberation that made it okay to discuss the most intimate details of our bodies and sex lives on daily talk shows has represented a quantum leap forward for human sexuality, the information glut on the subject has also increased the amount of pressure that both men and women feel in bed. If you don't know the ins and outs of deep genital massage or how to achieve extended orgasm or how to female ejaculate, then you are made to feel as if you have flunked sex, he says.
