rain for years. Some have hot, dry winds that sweep over miles of sand. But this picture of deserts is only partly true.
Deserts have two things in common. They get less than 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain a year. And, in deserts, water rises into the air as a gas, or evaporates, very quickly.
