Imprinting, QWERTYnomics, increasing returns, vicious circles, virtuous cycles, and path dependencethe field is captivated by the role of history and experience as they inform contemporary action. Appreciative of these insights, yet mindful of the power of human agency, Raghu Garud and Peter Karne have made a wonderful contribution to our understanding of technological innovation and change. Well aware of the recent work in evolutionary theory and the science of chaos and complexity, they challenge the sometimes deterministic flavor of much of this work. They are interested in uncovering the place of agency in these theories that take history so seriously. In the end, they are as interested in path creation and destruction as they are in path dependence.
