This richly illustrated atlas written by a team of experts guides the reader to the applications of lasers and light technologies in dermatology. It is divided in two parts: the first reviews the physical and optical concepts related to lasers and light sources, and provides a detailed description of surgical (ablative and non-ablative), vascular and pigmentary laser devices. It also discusses difficult-to-treat conditions, such as melasma and scars. The second part of the atlas is more clinically-oriented, presenting reproducible parameters and high-resolution images of pre and post-treatment, and desired end points in order to achieve an optimal result. Enabling readers to gain an understanding of the various topics concerning lasers, it explores conventional, non-conventional and combined laser treatments in a wide range of indications, as well as practical aspects such as medicolegal issues, informed consent and management of complications. The increasing knowledge and growing expertise in lasers and light devices make it necessary for physicians to be aware of the latest developments in this quickly evolving field. As such, this book is of interest to all physicians working in dermatology, cosmetology and aesthetic medicine, as well as to physician assistants and nurses using lasers in their daily practice.

Preface

Laser technology is quickly evolving with the presence of newer lasers, along with new indications which are constantly being introduced. The use of lasers has become a major discipline and is currently practiced in Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, etc. This book offers a practical atlas rich in images and dermatological and cosmetic indications to laser treatments. The authors of this synthetic guide to dermatological laser therapy are well known in their respective fields and have attempted to cover each topic in the most comprehensive, readable, and understandable format. This book is a good reference for physicians and residents who want to approach lasers and energy devices for different skin conditions. It also represents a valid consultation for the more expert practitioners in the field as it contains many updated references.

All of the parameters indicated are reproducible and enables the reader to have an easy approach toward reading and understanding the various topics on lasers. The textbook is divided into two parts: the first part overviews physics and optical concepts of lasers and light sources, and it is followed by a complete description of the laser devices classified in surgical (ablative and non-ablative), vascular, and pigmentary. A focus on difficult-to-treat indications such as melasma and scars is reported. The second part is a clinical atlas with reproducible parameters and high-resolution images of pre- and posttreatment and desired end points in order to achieve an optimal result. Conventional use, nonconventional treatments, and combined laser treatments are fully described in a wide range of indications. The expanding knowledge and growing expertise in lasers and light devices make it necessary for physicians to be up-to-date about the advancements in this field. I anticipate that this book will be of interest to all the physicians who use or are interested in using lasers in their practice.

About the Book

This textbook includes a large appendix on the management of a laser medical office. Safety, legal, and general aspects regarding digital photography, wound healing, and anesthesia are deeply covered. The final part of the book has an addendum on the treatment of actinic keratosis.

Authors Note

The idea of this atlas on laser treatment of skin diseases comes from the collaboration of the Italian Group for Laser in Dermatology (GILD) with Professor Sergio Chimenti, Chair of Dermatology at the University of Rome, Tor Vergata, a mentor for all of us. He always supported our research projects and believed in the role of advanced technology applied to the skin. The Masters Degree Course for Lasers and Energy Devices in Dermatology held at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and the development of an outpatient service in the Italian public health-care service represent some of his precious intuitions.

The work of the GILD resulted in several publications on international peer-reviewed journals, participation to national and international conferences, and commitment to patients health and well-being.
