Preface
Hyperhidrosis is a disease that does not kill, but that does disrupt the life of the patient. It not only affects the patients quality of life but also has a strong influence on the development of their personality. Other aspects of the disease that are rarely thought about, but that can have a great influence on the patient, are the discomfort of the condition and even the impossibility of carrying out some professional activities. It can be dangerous for patients with serious symptoms to carry out certain activities, and in some cases it can even exclude patients from various occupations, such as being electronic technicians or pharmacists, or being members of the military or police forces with jobs that involve a high level of stress.
Hyperhidrosis is not well known generally, although it is present in at least 1% of the global population, and its prevalence could be as high as 3%. Health professionals also dont know a great deal about the condition. In the era of the amazing availability of informationinformation that can be reliable or falseit is very important to be familiar with the whole picture of this bothersome condition.
To achieve this purpose, Hyperhidrosisa Complete Guide to Diagnosis and Management was conceived as a manual for the thorough understanding of hyperhidrosis. We selected professionals from different fieldspsychologists and psychiatrists, dermatologists, endocrinologists, surgeons, and nutritioniststo write the different chapters.
We have paid special attention to the clinical and surgical treatment of the condition. Although surgery is still the most effective treatment for most indications at all sites of hyperhidrosis presentation, as well as for facial blushing, you can find many alternatives in the book. Side effects of treatments like sympathectomy have resulted in the development of other treatments, which are also described here. The purpose of the book is to share as much experience as possible from some of the best specialists worldwide.
We cannot fail to inform about the side effects and complications that can occur not only with clinical treatment, but also with the surgical procedures that are often necessary for the care of these patients. We have chapters devoted to these side effects and chapters devoted to the prevention and treatment of compensatory hyperhidrosis, one of the most frequent problems that can be caused by surgical treatment. This problem is faced with rigor and all the latest information on the subject is included.
In this book we find, for the first time, a desire not only to provide information about hyperhidrosis, but also information on how to select the best indication for treatment and the best treatment; the final results; and the effectiveness of the treatment, whether it is clinical, psychological, or surgical. Several points are considered important in this book, but we highlight the chapters about patient selection, clinical treatment, surgical treatment, compensatory hyperhidrosis, and dietary changes. There is also a chapter written by a patient who underwent surgery on three occasions and a chapter by a physician with legal training, who writes about the medico-legal implications of treatment. Last but not least are two chapters about sympathectomy for plantar hyperhidrosis, written by the most experienced surgeons in that field.
To conclude, patients and their relatives, physicians, lawyers, surgeons, or indeed anyone who is eager for knowledge about the subject, will find in this book the most up-to-date and reliable information about hyperhidrosis.
