Preface

This book had been composed to provide concrete information about the structural properties and various industrial applications of lignin. As a well-known biopolymer on the earths surface still, lignin is underutilized and not well explored. The complexities in the molecular structure and properties and poor solubility of the lignin pose some challenges for utilization of lignin at industrial scale. Moreover, this is one of the by-products of two major industries bioethanol and paper/pulp manufacturing units. In North American and European countries, the excessive production of lignin from these industries also added the lignin as a pollutant to the environment. Thus, it becomes very necessary to find out the possible methods to minimize its production or further utilization to convert it into value-added products. Thus, the present book was encouraged by the ambition that lignin can be used as powerful raw material for the synthesis of various products of commercial value. This book will provide detailed information about the sources, techniques of lignin treatment origin, structure, physicochemical properties, and various applications in agriculture, food, pharmaceutical, and nanotechnology industries. We hope that information provided in the chapters written by various experienced researchers will surely helpful for the researchers, industrialists, and young students working in the field of biomass utilization, biofuels production, and waste management. In this book, we compiled the chapters contributed by well-experienced academicians and scientists working in the bio-based products and green chemistry. The fundamental rationale of this book is to provide important information about the various topics on lignin on a single platform. The editors have a keen interest in the lignin conversion and its utilization which encouraged them to compose this book and provide in the public domain. One does not need to spend many hours to gather information on a single topic and get puzzled by various newly published research articles and old data which sometime become contradictory to each other. Thus, in the book, we mentioned the chapter contents on all the relevant topics on lignin which become the area of thrust for various research groups. Our chapter gives important information about the application of lignin in the agricultural and food industry. We are firmly hopeful that this book will be helpful for all biotechnologists, academicians, and industrialists.
