Preface
No language is simple, and the language of business may be one of the most complex of all. Certain terms and expressions have a number of different meanings, depending on the circumstances, the company, and even the department.
Everyone in business is required to master an ever-growing number of terms. Some are jargon unique to the company and characteristic of the culture in force. Other terms and expressions are commonly used; many have a number of different meanings. This Little Black Book suggests some common and basic meanings to the language of business, notably in the following areas:
Accounting
Automation
Bookkeeping
Finance
Human Resources
Insurance
Law
Marketing and Sales
Math
No one book can comprehensively offer every term used in business. Terminology is constantly evolving. I have avoided listing widely used and commonly understood words in the interest of space. Although

some basic concepts and ideas are included in the following pages, this book is aimed at the middle-level manager interested in using a single book as a resource for terminology.
The Little Black Book series is a collection of books that summarize specific, practical ideas for the manager. This dictionary sums up many of the areas covered in previous books, and provides easy-to-find definitions for many of the terms discussed elsewhere in the series.

abandonment The voluntary disposal or donation of property, specifically business assets. Upon abandonment, any remaining book value of the asset is written off as a loss. In some instances, it is more economical to abandon property than to salvage it or try to sell it.

Example: Certain inventories owned by a corporation were damaged by weather. The value of the goods was so low that the costs involved in selling them would not justify the effort, so the company abandoned them. A book entry was made to record the elimination of what was then considered worthless assets.
Picture 13
ABC method A system of assigning priority value to inventory items. The most expensive items are classified in the A group, while the least expensive are coded as C items. The designation may be used to reorganize placement in a storage facility or to determine the frequency of physical counts. Classifying inventory in this manner also helps companies to identify inventory purchasing trends from one season to another and to eliminate working capital problems associated with overpurchase of expensive items during lower-volume periods.
