Introduction

The world as we know it is fucked. There are more and more people every day fighting for fewer and fewer resources. If you are lucky enough to have a job then you will also be familiar with the constant day-to-day struggle and stress that this job has placed on you.

Every day you are threatened with the potential possibility of being laid-off or fired ore downsized and it seems that there is no hope in sight. Or maybe you are not one of the lucky ones. Maybe you got your degree in Art or the humanities and now you are virtually unemployable. If only you had gone into tech right? It seems that the only people doing good these days are people in tech or people that were born with lots of money already.

If you had been born with a silver spoon in your mouth, you would not be reading this right now, but how did those people get into that position in the first place? Why is it that some people are privileged and others need to fight for dear survival just to keep a roof over their heads?

There are a few reasons actually.

Luck. Lets face it, some people just got lucky

Nepotism. For those who did not win the lottery, they got "lucky" by being associated with someone who did.

Skill. Sure there are a few people who, by the means of their skill alone, have managed to become successful but lets face it, those people are few and far between. They are so few that I would consider them a statistical anomaly that should simply be ignored.

I would be the first person to point out that I am also a benefactor of some or all of the above, however I want this to change. I dont want to be the only person doing well when many of my friends and family are struggling.

It is for them that I write this book.

And to be clear, this book has one sole purpose. I will teach you what you need to get a job in tech. I will do so by giving you a bare minimum of skills required to do various jobs in tech and eventually and work your way up to financial independence. I will explain these concepts in simple and easy to digest ways that you will understand. Sure, there may be a few things that you need to re-read, and also I do not suggest skipping to the end, but if you can make it through this book you will have the fundamentals down.

Minimum Viable Programmer

Everything you need to know and nothing more to ditch your dead end job and join the world of tech.

PART ONE
The tech landscape

Intro to Tech Lets be honest Fuck this chapter Seriously most of this - photo 1
Intro to Tech
Lets be honest Fuck this chapter Seriously most of this shit you probably - photo 2
Lets be honest... Fuck this chapter! Seriously most of this shit you probably already know so scan through the subjects and if it seems obvious just go on. I put this chapter here just in case there was a few basic terms or concepts that you may not have already learned just being a human on this earth. With this in mind, here we go...
What is a computer?
Pretty basic stuff, but here it is:
Motherboard This is the main thing that holds all the components. it has the CPU (Central Processing Unit) BIOS (Basic Input Output System) and a bunch of slots to plug in other stuff. Note: the BIOS is the native operating system of the machine and varies per manufacturer
Hard Disk This is where we store stuff permanently. they come in various formats such as magnetic spinning disk, optical, and SSD They have different sizes and speeds.
RAM Random Access Memory; This is where we store stuff temporarily. Its much faster than the Hard Disk but we have to load stuff into it every time we start the computer.
Keyboard / Mouse / Trackpad / Microphone / Joystick etc... These are all devices to get input into the computer.
Monitor This is where we see stuff. Note: you can often use a standard digital TV as a monitor these days.
Ports The computer comes with both physical ports (such as the connectors on the back, like an ethernet or a wifi port) and also virtual ports which are numbered fro 1 to This is how the computer keeps track of which data is coming from where. Note: the internet usually runs over port 80 (for non-secure) or port 443 for secure transmissions. (SSL)
Graphics / Sound cards Many motherboards either have really crappy onboard graphics and sound or simply dont have them at all so you have to add extra cards to support your needs.
Types of computers
Most people think of computers in the terms of the operating system that runs on them. So you have PC (Windows Operating Systems) Mac, and Other (Other a combination of hundreds of variations of Linux type operating systems). In reality, almost any hardware can run almost any operating system
You may be surprised also to learn that the vast majority of the computers on this planet are actually in the other category being that they are internet web servers or internet network switching devices almost all of which run some sort of Linux based operating system.
What is the internet?
Go to Google, click on the images link and search for internet diagram What youll see is hundreds of different diagrams for how people perceive of the internet. They are all accurate to some degree or another. You do not need to fully understand how this works but you should know the basics which are:
  • Your computer is either physically or via wifi/bluetooth connected to your local router/modem in your house or to something similar in the building where you work
  • your local router/modem is physically connected to your local ISP (Internet Service Provider). These are companies like Time Warner and AT&T etc...
  • From your local ISP your machine is physically connected to every other machine on the planet. There are many layers of machines actually that form the network and many devices and switches etc... its all very complicated at this level.
What are servers?
Essentially, servers are no different than any other computer. They have the same basic components in them. The only difference is how they are configured and what software is running on them. Generally speaking these computers are made with lots of storage space (RAM and hard drive space) and have larger CPUs in them. Often times they do not have any graphics cards because that is usually not needed for a server. Additionally servers can be:
  • Physical such as an actual machine in a box sitting in a server room
  • Virtual these are also on a physical machine however the machine may be configured to actually have several virtual machines on it, or conversely you may have many physical machines which all combine to make one very large virtual machine.
  • In a Cloud This is an array of machines (physical and/or virtual) that work together to provide content.
  • Web Servers These are servers that are specifically configured to serve web pages. They often have several server-side programming languages installed on them to figure out the logic behind the site and also store databases
