This book is the second publication of Beyond the Checkride: Flight Basics Your Flight Instructor Never Taught You. The initial writing was by the late Mr. Howard Fried, whereas with this revision I have joined forces and serve as co-author. The goal is to continue to provide aviators, and aviation enthusiasts, with the flying knowledge that the very popular Beyond the Checkride has provided readers over the past several years.

Howard Fried was a legendary military pilot, lawyer, aviation writer, CFI (Certified Flight Instructor), and DPE (Designated Pilot Examiner) who, with this book, shares valuable aviation lessons gleaned from over 50 years of flying experiencewhich included over 4,000 flight examinations. Information he provides, much of which is derived from his intriguing stories, will make you feel as if youre sitting around talking in a hangar, while soaking up information that will help every pilot. Over the years Howard has continually preached that pilots should never stop learning and to be as prepared as possibleand that one of the best ways, by far, is to learn from other pilots experiences and mistakes.

Ive consistently found that most pilots enjoy reading about other pilots experiences, especially those that provide insight into others mistakes and close calls while flying. Perhaps you already subscribe to aviation magazines, and have noticed that each issue of almost every aviation magazine has a column where pilots send in a short story about the mistakes, close calls, and/or near-disasters they encountered while flying. FLYING Magazine, whose column is titled I Learned About Flying From That, has also published several books with the same title made up of many stories copied from the column. The monthly magazine published by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, AOPA PILOT, has a column titled Never Again, and PLANE & PILOT magazines popular column is titled A Flight Ill Never Forget. These columns are, and always have been, extremely popular.
