Running is about more than just putting one foot in front of the other; it is about our lifestyle and who we are.

WARM-UP
I was working harder and longer to try and keep pace, but no matter how many hours I put in, it was not enough. Like many people in todays modern world, I felt to be either falling behind or chasing that next thing. I was feeling under pressure day after day, both physically and mentally. I didnt have enough time for the essential elements in my life my health, family, and friends. Life was passing by too fast. I was burning out and unable to do anything about it.
But I then discovered a mindset that turned my life around. By thinking like a runner during the day, in everyday situations, I became happier and more productive. With higher levels of energy and motivation, I was able to balance a fulltime corporate career with running my own business, being a better father and husband, and finding time to write a book all at the same time.
How did I come across this approach?
Running is something that has been with me my whole life. I started running as a child and my competitive racing began when I was eleven. Much later in life I began experimenting with techniques to improve my running, and as a result I was still getting faster even in my forties. But it was when I applied the same techniques and started using a runners mindset in other areas of my life that everything just seemed to click and life changed for the better! All I was doing was adopting the same mindset that I used when running but in everyday life. I started running life differently by thinking like a runner .
Furthermore, it seemed so easy and natural. Rather than having to change my behaviour or way of thinking, I was simply using my runners brain the thought patterns I was familiar with in different situations. The results were phenomenal because of one very important reason the way our brains work (when running) provides the emotional experiences we need as human beings to enjoy life. Thinking like a runner during the day was not only making me more productive but also a happier person!
As we all experience the same issues, challenges and problems in the modern world, it struck me that my formula may also work for other people. After all, a successful runner is not just the winner of a race, but anybody who, by using a specific mindset, physically enjoys and mentally benefits from completing a journey. If life is itself a journey, then it stands to reason that anyone with a runners mindset has what it takes to navigate it and run a better life .
10 MILES TO A BETTER LIFE

This book consists of ten miles rather than chapters In each mile we will - photo 1
This book consists of ten miles, rather than chapters. In each mile, we will explore one of the ten principles of thinking like a runner in everyday life. As we progress through the book, I want you to imagine that you are on a training run with me as your coach. We will have a different conversation during each mile.
I know you already have the mindset to run a better life as all human beings are born to run. If you are a committed runner, even better because you will be even more familiar with a runners way of thinking. My job is to help you flick the switch and learn how to deploy your runners mindset to your advantage, not just when you run but throughout your day.
The pace at which we cover the miles in the book (your speed of reading) is not significant. You can turn the pages at a rate which is comfortable for you to absorb information. On the other hand, if you are a fast reader, I wont be holding you back with extra training exercises. You wont need to write down any goals, remember complex information or complete any tasks on paper.
While our speed (and finishing time) is not significant, what does matter is that we keep going together and complete all ten miles. Enjoy the run.

A BETTER LIFE
If life is a journey, not a destination it means life is not just defined by what we achieve , but, more importantly, by what we experience . Lets start with a question.
How would you describe the life of your dreams?
I dont want you to think about accomplishments or material possessions, but rather how you would like to experience life. Regardless of what we do, there are some common experiences that make us feel happy and satisfied as humans.
I would describe my dream life as
  • enjoying every day
  • moving forward in life with a sense of purpose
  • feeling energised
  • having control of my life
  • feeling satisfied every day
  • being active without burning out
  • achieving success in life
  • improving myself and become a better person
  • having the strength to finish what is important to me
  • enjoying a sense of freedom
I assume that some (or all) of these would also apply to you.
A RUNNING EVOLUTION
Our first human ancestors appeared over five million years ago These early - photo 3
Our first human ancestors appeared over five million years ago. These early distant relations were ape-like creatures that had started to walk on two legs, rather than four, but had not yet developed into the elite endurance runners that homo sapiens (modern humans) are today. Anthropologists believe that our prowess in running began to develop around two to three million years ago, as our bodies began to adapt to support our ability to hunt.
Early humans hunted for food by running down faster animals (like antelopes) over extremely long distances on the plains of Africa, usually during the hottest parts of the day. Our prey would have to stop after bursts of running to avoid overheating, but eventually, after persistent tracking over several hours, the exhausted animal would be unable to continue. All humans today are descended from these ultimate running hunters. Even today there are tribes in parts of Africa that still practise persistence hunting. The bushman tribes that live around Botswana and South Africa, known collectively as the San, are one such group that can still hunt in this way.
