PREFACE
I know of few areas of scholarship as highly charged with political implications and as fraught with political landmines as the one that is the subject of this book: the course of Basque nationalism since the conclusion of the Spanish Civil War, in 1939. Even if it were in fact possible for an outsider to disengage himself from the normative dimensions of the subject (a disengagement I consider neither possible, necessary, nor indeed desirable, given the circumstances), he would quickly become aware that every study of the complex questions dealt with here is sooner or later seized upon by partisans in support of, or refutation of, one or another of the several positions taken by Basques and Spaniards. Therefore, I find it necessary at the outset of this book to alert the reader to my own predispositions, to describe how I came to hold such opinions, and to indicate how my attitudes have influenced my approach to this question.
