Laird Hamilton has been hailed as the worlds greatest big-wave surfer. His first book, Force of Nature, allows readers a rare glimpse inside the unique philosophy that has created his circumstances, and not the other way around. After all, this is a man whose biological father abandoned him shortly after he was born; whose first job was working on a pig farm; who dropped out of school in eleventh grade. And then the career decision: surfer. Though earning enough to pay the rent as any kind of surfer is next to impossible, Hamilton has ended up in the place we all desire to be: doing exactly what he loves, becoming the worlds best in the process, making a great living, being surrounded by nature and family, radiating peak health and fitness, and succeeding by any definition of the word.

How did he get there? And more importantly, how can the rest of us join him?

Force of Nature is a detailed map to that destination, with Laird Hamilton as the readers guide....

Its a big world And we humans Not so big If you put yourself into a position - photo 2

Its a big world. And we humans? Not so big. If you put yourself into a position where you realize that in your solar plexus, one thing I can promise is that youll never feel more alive. For some of us, it doesnt take leaping off a cliff. It could be a high porch. Its all relative.

Our days are meant to be fun. Once you lose that thread, I think youve just lost the essence of the whole deal. If you build up a wealth of experiences, letting yourself be amazed by everything and everyone around you, then fun and its close relative, joy, will be the inevitable by-products. The last thing you want to do is to look back at the end and think coulda, woulda, shoulda.

The idea is to become an old wizard; to live a long and fruitful life and have family and be healthy and enjoy the ride. And speaking of the ride, why not let it rip, at least a little bit? Everyone I know whos really stoked about getting out of bed in the morning does that to some extent.

What you can do, only you can imagine. Albert Einstein (who, as you know, was a pretty smart guy) said, Imagination is greater than reality. For each of us, reality is as wide and as open as our imaginations will allow it to be. On the pages that follow, Ive described some of the ideas, strategies, and philosophies that have worked in my life. Though were all different, and ultimately we all need to write our own playbooks, I hope theres something in my journey that might inspire you in yours.

Life is for living.

Writing a book has something in common with big-wave surfing It takes a team - photo 4

Writing a book has something in common with big-wave surfing: It takes a team to make sure everything turns out right. My deepest thanks go to Susan Casey and to my manager, Jane Kachmer. Id also like to send some aloha to Sloan Harris of ICM and to Karen Rinaldi, Shannon Welch, Leigh Haber, Chris Rhoads, and the entire Rodale team. Many friends and colleagues generously gave their time and their expertise to this project, and their contributions are deeply appreciated: Dave Kalama, Brett Lickle, Don Wildman, Don King, T. R. Goodman, Paul Chek, Gerry Lopez, Rob Machado, Giada De Laurentiis, Nate Heydari, Neil ElAttrache, Nadia Toraman, Keri and Ed Stewart, Tom Servais, Sylvain Cazenave, Kurt Markus, Sonny Miller, Jeff Hornbaker, David Turnley, Sam Jones, Dave Homcy, Erik Aeder, Tim McKenna, Darrell Wong, Davis Factor, John Russell. And thank you to all the people who inspire me so I can hopefully inspire others.

Were all human, which means we all have the same opportunities and the same struggles. Its all about that voice inside our head that we call our mindwhat it leads us to believe determines how we act and how our lives unfold. Which is why when I catch myself thinking bleak thoughts, Ill go out and do something physically strenuous, like clear brush or move rocks or paddle down the coast.

I believe that our thoughts have real, powerful effects on us. For instance, lets say you wake up one morning in a rotten mood. You dont know why, but youre just looking for a fight. Well, in my experience, the moment you walk out your front door youre going to find someone who wants to fight you back. Hell probably be standing right there. On the other hand, if youre just thinking about enjoying yourself, youre probably not running into a lot of complications. Everything comes down to attitude: You determine what yours is, and the external world will reflect it back.

Whether thats good news or bad news depends on youon your outlook. If you think youre not able to do something, guess what? Youre right. What if you believe that everythings for the best and see the beauty all around you, and you have faith that things will be good? Youre right, too. If you cultivate something in your mind, you give it a life. Its really that simple.

A LITTLE ADRENALINE EVERY DAY
KEEPS THE BOREDOM AWAY.

When I was 10, my step father took me to Waimea Falls on Oahu. I walked to the edge of a 60-foot cliff, and when he looked away, I jumped. For whatever reason, from the start its been in my spirit to do those kinds of things. Ive always wanted to jump from the highest place, experience the greatest thrill.

I may be an extreme case, but we all need to take risks. I think it goes back to our primitive state, our deepest DNA, when we were hunters and had to avoid getting eaten by large animals. Survival meant risk. The need for adventure is part of human nature. Its in every cell of our bodies. When some people hear the word risk, they think of life-or-death situations that theyd rather avoid. But risk doesnt always have to be life threatening. It can be as simple as putting yourself in an unfamiliar situation.

Some people dont need to go out of their way to seek risk. If you live in Afghanistan, for instance, youre not in need of any extra uncertainty. But for those of us who are fortunate enough to live in places where our lives are relatively safe, I think if we challenged ourselveseven scared ourselvesonce a day, wed be better people. It helps to have that little jolt of perspective to remind you that lifes fragile.

The distinction between being courageous and being reckless is an important one. Courageous means youre able to calculate what youre doing. In my life Ive taken calculated risks, as well as inadvertent risks. Ive seen 18-foot-long tiger sharks in the water with me; Ive been trapped under waterfalls. My mom was surprised that I made it to my 20th birthday. I guess its the whole nine lives thing. There were a few close calls, but Im still here. Ive got a few of those nine lives left.

FEAR: NOT TO BE FEARED Every so often, in an article or an interview, someone describes me as fearless. In my opinion, thats like calling me an idiot. Fear is a natural response. Without it, we wouldnt survive. If youre never scared, then youve either never been hurt or youre completely ignorant. The idea that fear is something to deny is completely misguided.
