PREFACE
This book reflects the passion I have had for most of my adult life to learn about, acquire, grow, and breed new Kalmia. As I look back on 35 years of involvement with the genus, it is clear that significant progress has been made in elevating these plants, especially mountain laurel, Kalmia latifolia, from primarily a roadside and woodland attraction to a major feature in our gardens that is available in assorted forms and colors. In part, then, this book is an account of the domestication of mountain laurel in the sense of "taming" the wild plant and making use of it in our domestic surroundings. It has been my fortunate circumstance to be at the center of much of this work and, indeed, even to have been paid by the state of Connecticut for some of it while working for more than 25 years as a plant breeder at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven. The progress made represents the efforts of many people; certainly my own work has benefited from the cooperation and good will of too many others to enumerate without running the risk of leaving several out. Sadly, some are no longer with us and others have scattered far and wide. Many of these people are mentioned in the text, but all deserve my heartfelt thanks. Often they have been my source of inspiration and know-how and many times the physical hands to do the job.
