Formal English
Every day, I listen to the radio. It allows me to stay informed with the news.
I also learn a lot of things from shows with themes that are as different as the environment, entertainment shows, politics, or music. I can also entertain myself with comedic or entertainment programs. Moreover, as I only need my ears to listen to the radio, I can do other things at the same time. Doing the dishes becomes less a chore, for example!
The only thing a bit annoying is to find the right frequency. Me, I have a solution. I have several radios, one in the kitchen, in the bedroom, in the office, and of course, the audio system in the living room. My tuner is programmed to the antennas of Radio France, a group of French public radio stations of which one, RFI ("Radio France Internationale"), is broadcast abroad. However, there are a lot of "radio libres"* that are both generalist and specialized. They have multiplied since 1981, when the monopoly of Radio France stopped.
Radios are the best way to broadcast music. You maybe know that French radios must broadcast a minimum of forty percent of songs from French native authors. Among these forty percent, twenty percent must be new talents or new productions. This quota was voted to promote French songs. French people can then develop their musical talents. Thanks to this quota, French music stays dynamic. You surely know about dit Piaf or Jacques Brel, but you might also know Justice and Yael Naim (French-Israeli).
There is so much choice; I am often afraid to miss an interesting show because I am listening to another one. Fortunately, thanks to new technology, I don't miss any show. I just have to go on my favorite radio website, which offers shows in podcast form. I can listen to them at home or download them on my digital iPod. In the subway, I do not have a hard time to catch the radio waves any more. I listen by "balladodiffusion."**
Soon, we also are going to have to change our radio receivers because radio will become digital! They will be the same programs, but in better audio quality!
And you, have you already listened to French-speaking radio?
* "Radio libre" is used to refer to "pirate radios" in France and nowadays refers to non-commercial associative radio, which is the heir of this movement.
