I would like to acknowledge that trying to understand the why of behavior is probably one of the most fascinating endeavors that a person can pursue. Thanks to Ball State University, it has been possible for me to do this. I would like to thank all former students in my motivation and emotion course who read the book and provided feedback. An appreciation also goes to my former colleagues, Thomas Holtgraves, David Perkins, Stephanie Simon-Dack, Anjolii Diaz, and Guy Mittleman, who were sounding boards for my ideas. An expression of gratitude goes to my wife, Cindy Ruman, for her expertise and help.

Chapter 7
Stress, Coping, and Health

The blessings of life are not equal to its ills, though the number of the two may be equal; nor can any pleasure compensate for the least pain.

Pliny the Elder, A.D. 77

Life is not/merely being alive, but being well.

Martial, A.D. 95

Simply put, stress moves people into action. It motivates them to manipulate stressors so as to alter their impact. And it also motivates behavior aimed at diminishing or removing stress (Baum & Posluszny, 1999). This is the main theme of this chapter, and the following questions can help guide your understanding:

  1. When are life events stressful, and when are they not?
  2. How do stressors affect people physically, psychologically, and behaviorally?
  3. Can the appraisal of life events alter their impact on a persons well-being?
  4. How can a person cope with life events and the stress they evoke?
  5. Is coping a process that involves planning, execution, and feedback?

Occasionally, you may have a bad day. You oversleep because the alarm did not go off. Consequently, you are late for an important exam and so perform poorly. A friend borrowed a textbook and has not returned it. You wanted to study from it tonight. Of course this may not matter, since your boss says you need to fill in this evening for a sick coworker. You have no choice; you need the job, as you are chronically short of money. In addition, youve had this lingering cold and sore throat that seems unshakable. If only you had some time for yourself. This individual is confronted with a variety of events that make her or his life unhappy. Some of the events are distinct, while others are chronic; some are more intense than others; only some seem controllable; they appear to be accumulating; and all are negative. Nevertheless, these events motivate the individual into action in attempts at relief.

How and when do life events become stressors? How do they result in stress?

The previous tale of woe illustrates how life events make demands on an individuals motivation and behavior. Completing projects, preparing for final exams, and considering career goals are examples of positive demands that motivate an individual to achieve them. A broken printer and a car that needs repair are negative events that motivate a person to remedy them. The death of a friend, a broken heart, or being in a bad traffic accident are severe negative events that require adjustment necessary for recovery. Background stimulation from noise, light, and overcrowding plus invisible germs motivate action that taxes the bodys ability to cope. Action to meet the demands of life requires the appropriate resources. Does a person have enough time, tangible resources, and motivation? Coping refers to behavior that is motivated to adjust and to regulate those external demands and their consequences. What happens when an individual runs low on the resources needed to achieve positive events or to avoid or escape negative events? For instance, a student runs out of time before assignments are due and a low grade results. Fixing the printer or car strains a persons budget and means giving up buying other things. When family, friends, or counselors are not available for listening and advice, the student may be unable to dispel grief or make career decisions. Or, for example, what resources are required to maintain a romantic relationship, recover from an accident, or fight off germs? Stress results when life demands exceed coping resources either because the demands are too great or resources are inadequate. Stress is the interplay between environmental challenges and the bodys attempt to maintain homeostatic regularitythat is, to remain in equilibrium or remain steadfast (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984; Monroe, 2008).

Many demands in life motivate an individual to make adjustments. Passing university courses, fixing your car, and working are dealt with effectively by most people. Demands that are not dealt with effectively, however, become stressors; that is, they produce stress. Stressors have certain characteristics, as shown in (Wheaton & Montazer, 2010). Stressors are conditions that are demanding, challenging, and threatening to the welfare of an individual. Demand means that the individual must deal or cope with the stressor, while challenge implies that greater effort than normal will be required. Threat means that stressors pose the possibility of being potentially harmful to the individual either psychologically or physically. There are a variety of different stressors, such as daily hassles, life demands, traumatic events, and nonevents. In addition, stressors vary in duration and magnitude plus predictability and controllability.
