PREFACE

We are thankful to all the readers of the first edition of this textbook, Foundations of Mental Health Promotion. Mental health issues are becoming a major area within public health with increasing incidents of gun violence, more incarceration of people with mental illnesses, and fewer mental health professionals who are capable of taking care of the needs of the mentally sick. In this context, there has been a renewed interest in the prevention of mental illnesses and the promotion of mental health, especially through health education specialists, nursing professionals, counselors, and mental health advocates. This book offers an introduction to the field of mental health promotion. It includes medical, epidemiological, behavioral, sociological, political, historical, developmental, and cultural perspectives on mental health. The goal of this book is to serve as an introductory text in the area of mental health for undergraduate students, introductory graduate classes, and practitioners interested in working in mental health. To our knowledge, this is the only text available for health education and health promotion students in this area.

This book emphasizes both individual-level and population-level approaches to dealing with mental health problems. Topics include mental health, mental illness, and historical perspectives; roles of health educators and health promoters in mental health promotion; determinants of mental health; stress and coping; understanding major psychotic disorders; understanding mood, anxiety, and personality disorders; alcohol dependence, tobacco use, and substance abuse; essentials of psychopharmacology and treatment of mental health disorders; mental health promotion for children and adolescents; mental health promotion for adults; mental health promotion for older adults; and mental health organizations.

Each chapter begins with key terms and a set of learning objectives. A thorough introduction and a concise summary have been included in each chapter. At least one boxed article called a Focus Feature has been included in each chapter. These Focus Features deal with interesting discoveries, important aspects, anecdotes, or future directions being pursued on a particular topic that should help consolidate interest on a topic and foster further reading. In addition to the Focus Features, important points and sometimes important quotations from each chapter have been set in boxes to emphasize important topics. Each chapter includes a skill-building activity and review questions, as well as a detailed reference list and further readings. Each chapter also includes an annotated guide to reliable websites to explore. Each Web exercise provides interactive activities that directly relate to the chapter content and help students apply their new knowledge practically.

New to this edition is the inclusion of a case study in each chapter with questions for class discussion. All references and websites have been updated in this new edition. Also, several new and updated topics have been added such as new models of mental health, new legislation pertaining to mental health, latest work on CHES and MCHES competencies from NCHEC, updates on measurement and determinants of mental health, stress-management and relaxation techniques, updates on theories of stress and coping, updates on all mental health conditions using the DSM-5, updated epidemiological data on mental health conditions, updated medications, Jungian therapy (analytical psychotherapy), hypnosis and self-hypnosis, updated interventions for various life stages, and information on newer mental health organizations.
