My first venture into mental health, or perhaps at that time more appropriate to say mental illness, was when I was invited to manage a psychiatric hospital. I hasten to add the invitation came not on the basis of my knowledge of mental health but because, like many other similar institutions, the hospital was ready for an enquiry and I had experience of working in a hostile industrial relations climate.
Even allowing for the fact that I knew very little about mental health it was patently clear that the service we provided was inhumane, expensive and ineffective. Unfortunately the patients had little say in the matter.
Quickly realising there must be a more appropriate way to provide care I sought advice and counsel from colleagues in a series of seminars and at conferences where I learnt from others and on occasions perhaps others learned from me. This sharing of knowledge was of mutual benefit and for those working within a climate of scarce resources helped overcome the wasteful practice of trying to re-invent the wheel.
When the opportunity arose we tried to put some of the advice received into practice and commissioned a mental health promotion unit. Although we only had a candle to light the way and even as we often stumbled in the dark, with help and encouragement from others a clearer path began to emerge.
One of the fruits of our collaboration with others in a similar position was the European Conference on the Promotion of Mental Health which over the years has provided a vehicle for the exchange of knowledge and experiences and for the establishment of networks for practitioners from across national and cultural barriers. This is the seventh volume in the Promotion of Mental Health series which will, I hope, further disseminate the lessons we have learned and the experiences we shared at the European Conferences.
In Volume Seven we have endeavoured to build upon the framework developed by Dr Dennis Trent; the one person who can rightly take credit for the reporting of the Conference proceedings throughout the 1990s. We have sought to bring together the ideas and practices of a diverse group of people bound together with the common aim of securing the rightful place of mental health promotion on the political, health and social and economic agenda. I hope we have managed to maintain Dr Trents tradition.
