Dedication
Lise Bender Jrgensen is one of the founders of the North European Symposium for Archaeological Textiles (NESAT), which today is one of the most important conference series for archaeological textile research (see her article in this volume). Trained in prehistoric archaeology at the University of Copenhagen (Mag. art. 1976), she was awarded the Danish higher doctorate title, Dr. Phil. in 1993. After first being employed at Langelands Museum, and later as a research fellow at the University of Copenhagen and the Royal Danish Academy of Arts, School of Conservation in Denmark, Lise Bender Jrgensen moved to the University of Gothenburgs Department of Archaeology in Sweden in 1993. In 1996, she became Associate Professor and in 2002 Professor at the Norwegian University of Science & Technology, Institute of Archaeology in Trondheim, Norway. From 2002 to 2009 she was also Visiting Professor at the University College Bors, The Swedish School of Textiles, and in 2006 Visiting Professor at the Danish National Research Foundations Centre for Textile Research, at the University of Copenhagen.
With her impressive and long list of publications, Lise Bender Jrgensen is one of the European textile researchers who have had the greatest impact on the development of archaeological textile research in recent decades. Her comprehensive publications on textiles from graves from Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Schleswig-Holstein (1986) and the follow up on the North European grave finds (1992) have provided the European textile research field with an invaluable tool that will stand as a milestone for many decades. Likewise, her work on textiles from Mons Claudianus and Abu Shaar, Egypt has not only shed new light on Roman textile production, but also initiated the development of the new and important methodology of the visual evaluation of textiles.
Throughout her professional career Lise Bender Jrgensen has always worked in close connection with textile craftspeople and has always been in strong favour of incorporating craft knowledge in archaeological research. Lise Bender Jrgensen has promoted and developed textile research throughout a lifetime. She is a source of inspiration and a role model to us all, always encouraging students and young scholars to continue their work within the field of textile research.
We dedicate the 10th NESAT jubilee publication to Lise Bender Jrgensen as a small token of appreciation and wish her many fruitful years of research to the benefit of all archaeological communities.
