There is continued debate about how anatomy is best taught at the undergraduate level, but almost universal agreement that the subjects place in curricula has eroded dramatically in the last few decades. The inevitable consequence is young doctors who lack fundamental knowledge and exposure to anatomy upon graduating. Although there are some specialties that will not notice the deficiency, doctors wishing to train in anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine may feel themselves at a distinct disadvantage. Practice in these specialties requires anatomical knowledge to be applied almost daily and it is therefore right for FRCA exam candidates to continue to be rigorously tested for proficiency in this area. Herein lies the rationale for this book.

The challenge for any good textbook is to find the right balance between giving sufficient and too much information, having the correct ratio of text to illustration and to be interesting enough to be readable at the end of a busy clinical shift. The text is straightforward and is livened up by illustrations that are hand-drawn and digitally drawn images directed by the authors. This book has also been written by working clinicians who not only regularly put their own understanding of anatomy to the test in their clinical roles, but have taught the subject to postgraduate trainees over many years and have successfully prepared candidates for the FRCA examinations. This gives it a strong foundation of clinical and academic relevance.

I am confident that trainees will find this book a useful resource to help prepare for the FRCA exams, but clinical educators will also turn to it to refresh their own memory of difficult-to-recall areas of anatomy when they come to teach it. This book will hopefully provide a valuable addition to the trainees library and will ultimately achieve its stated aim to help deliver success in the FRCA examinations.

Our thanks to Dr Manohary Selvakumaran and Dr Eric Makmur of Southend University Hospital for the ultrasound images.

Anatomy knowledge is a requirement for both the primary and final components of the FRCA. During medical training, acquiring this knowledge is not standard but follows a variety of teaching methods such as dissections, prosections and anatomage leading to varied levels of background interest and awareness.
