Now, in Body Clutter, the FlyLady and Leanne Ely, the Dinner Diva and creator of the Saving Dinner series, team up to teach readers how to handle and erase the clutter they carry on their bodies and minds when it comes to body image. The FlyLady and Leanne say that its not about finding the perfect diet, its about the way you feel about food and your body and understanding sound nutrition. With warm voices, unique lingo, and no preaching, they apply a step-by-step technique, coaching the readers from beginning to end and sharing their own success stories along the way.

This book is lovingly dedicated to all of the FlyBabies and Menu-Mailerettes - photo 1

This book is lovingly dedicated to all of the FlyBabies and Menu-Mailerettes who have suffered in silence, thinking they were the only ones who have struggled and desperately wanted to release their Body Clutter.

Acknowledgments

Dear Friends,

No book is complete till we thank the people who helped give birth to our labor of love. The idea of Body Clutter was conceived during a month when we were focusing on moving and nutrition on the FlyLady website. We had written several essays dealing with food, nutrition, exercise, and getting rid of our stinking thinking. We decided that we might actually have a book that our members desperately needed. We instant-messaged each other with our ideas; we talked for hours on the phone and created an outline. And before we knew it, the book started to take shape.

We are SHEs. We get so easily bored with the process. We are filled with inspiration, but then, when the enthusiasm subsides, we are left with an unfinished project. In order to breathe some life back into our words, we begged Kelly to take on the daunting task of taking our words and turning them into a book. That was the real birthing process.

We had gone through the excitement of wanting to do a book, just like a woman does when she decides that she wants to have a baby. We had the idea, an outline, several chapters, but we didnt know what to do next. We needed a birthing coach. Kelly was the one person who pushed us when we needed pushing. She pulled things out of us when we were not willing to release our own Body Clutter, and she gave us hope that one day we would have a book to present to the world.

Every member of the FLY crew and Saving Dinner crew has cheered us on and helped us by taking on some of our chores so we would have more time to devote to our labor of love, Body Clutter . Robert, Tom, Justin, Jack, Michele, Rebecca, Wendy, Misty, Carolyn S., Paddi, Jessica, Kathy, Laura, Lee, Dana, Chris H., Katie, Jim, Michael, Darlena, Naomi, Shey, Alice, Sandy, Carolyn P., Emily, Ethan, Stephanie, T.J., Alexander, Courtney, Christopher P., Caroline, Peter, Miriam, Bonnie, Robyn, and Kandiwe give to all of you our heartfelt gratitude and thanks. To our FlyBabies and Menu-Mailerettes around the world, we thank you for asking us for this book, patiently waiting for it to come to life, for supporting us, and for being the reason that we do what we do.

This book had a life of its own. It was going to be born one way or another. The last months were tough, as with any birthing process. We could actually visualize our due date, but did we really have to go through the process every single day to get there? What else did we have to do; couldnt this be easier? Kelly told us that the reason we were struggling so with the book is that we were living a lie. We were not walking the walk. We could talk the talk, but we had to come face-to-face with our own Body Clutter if this book was going to come to life. Did we mention that she is one tough editor?

Even that was not enough for us. It took major personal health emergencies to get our attention. The fact was we were two people struggling with our own Body Clutter. What example could we be to the world if we were not taking care of ourselves? The book took on a newfound motivation; we began to take the BabySteps we were teaching and apply them to our lives. We started to see results.

Here we are with a finished book, but the book is not what was really born. It was through the journey that we took, not in the writing of the book but in taking our own words and applying them to our lives, that the book Body Clutter has actually given birth to us. You can take this journey, too, one BabyStep at a time. Read each page and start your own journey through the birthing process to discover the YOU who is hiding behind your Body Clutter.

We love you all,

FlyLady and Leanne

Foreword

Dear Friends,

I was given the ultimate honor of helping FlyLady and Leanne give birth to their labor of love, Body Clutter . What a labor it has been! When they asked me to join in on this life-changing event I was not prepared for the journey that I was about to embark on. I read what they had written so far and, while I liked the content, I did not love the book. There was so much more that these amazing women had to share, but they were not quite prepared to share it. When I first started working with them and asked questions, they would give me some very nice pat answers, but I wanted more because I knew that you would ask for more.

I relate this to the questions I get asked about the missions that I write for the FlyLady mentoring list. I am always asked, Just how do you know that I need to (fill in the blank)? The reason I know is that they are things that I need to do myself. Just as when I started asking FlyLady and Leanne questions, it was because I knew that you the reader would ask the same things. As time went by and the phone calls were getting longer and longer, I came to an astounding realization: FlyLady and Leanne are powerful women, helping thousands around the globe change their homes and lives, but they were underestimating their power to change their own lives.

As I continued to badger them, hunt them down on cell phones, and basically pound them over the head with my questions and arguments of why they had to answer me, we started to really bring this book into shape. As I dug deeper and deeper into their minds and hearts, they began to question themselves. We ended up having phone calls that were truly therapy sessions. We would talk about all the diet books, plans, etc., on the market and how they dont work. I remember interrupting a tirade on these books and saying very simply, Actually, they all work as long as you do them. Just so you know, it is not often that FlyLady and Leanne are silent. What I said that day rendered them speechlessbut only for a moment! That was a lightbulb moment and the beginning of a turning point for all of us. This book had to show you how to really dig deep within yourselves to find out how you found the weight, not just how to lose it.

That is when we started working on uncharted territory for FlyLady and Leanne. This book was not just about BabySteps and how to apply the FlyLady system to your Body Clutter. There were deep-rooted emotional issues that had to be addressed as well. I started giving them assignments so they could BabyStep through this processand we were on a roll! We thought we were on our way, but then we all started to get burned out and needed to take a break. During that time, I was still paying close attention to FlyLady and Leannehow they talked, what they said, what they wroteand I came to a big conclusion: It wasnt that we were burned out, it was that they were not living what they were writing about, or to use their words, they were talking the talk, but not walking the walk. There was a tear-filled conversation and the beginning of a new chapter, not just in this book but also in our lives.

There were moments of laughter, tears, arguments, and a few yelling matches, but our goal was always to share with you this amazing process of releasing your Body Clutter, not just from your backside and thighs but from between your ears as well. We went through some health scares along the way that you will read about in the book and had to peel back the layers of defense shields that had been in place for so long. We have come to the end of our writing journey and are now ready to invite you along for the ride.
