You probably dont spend a lot of time scrolling through the websites of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization, but if you did, youd find some stats that are scarier than any episode of Stranger Things . Im talking about some seriously frightening stuff. Heres some of the information Ive seen:
- Over 70 percent of Americans are either overweight or obese.
- Worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975.
- Most of the worlds population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight.
- Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer, which are some of the leading causes of preventable, premature death.
- Obesity is preventable.
At a time when medical advances are so incredible that they seem sprung straight out of science fiction, these facts are almost impossible to believe, yet they are not the stuff of make-believe. We appear to be in the midst of a full-blown metabolic meltdown.
The obesity epidemic has been a decades-long development, but in our own bodies, it can feel as though significant change happens overnightwe look away from the mirror for one minute and return to find a muffin top or man boobs. Ill tell you a little story as an example.
In June of 2019, my lovely wife, Heather, and I went to France for a two-week vacation. As one of the busiest plastic surgeons in the world, taking a vacation this long is not something I can do regularly; I have patients depending on me and a full staff of twenty-three who rely on me to keep them busy and employed. But between my medical practice and shooting episodes of Botched and License to Kill , I had been working nonstop for several months. I like to worklove it, actuallybut I needed a break. Off to France we went.
Once we arrived, we proceeded to eat whatever we wanted. Im talking pizza, bread, croissants, cheese, and then more bread, in outrageous excessand whatever we ate, we drank twice that. For two weeks, it was all high-carb, high-fat, high-alcohol, and minimal exercise.
Fans of our podcast or shows know that this is the opposite of our normal routine (except for the fat part). At home in Newport Beach, California, we eat very low-carb, fill up on plenty of high-quality fats, and... well, the drinking part isnt that different... but we both exercise diligently and daily.
What would you think the consequencesor lets call it the metabolic priceof this time in France might be? I cant speak for Heather because she was very coy about her stats after this trip, but for me, the price I paid was 14 pounds. I gained 14 pounds in two weeks. Thats a pound a day. My pants were tight, my shirts hugged my body in a way that I hate, my usual baseline high energy level was completely sapped. I was blown away by how awful I feltand frankly, how quickly it happened.
Now, my experience was at an accelerated rate (maybe its the European conversion rate?), but I think for a lot of people this is how weight gain happensyou make a seemingly innocuous choice once, or twice, and dont realize that the result is that your body makes a metabolic preference for fat storage. Since you likely arent aware this is happening, you dont go after this extra baggage right away, and it settles in. Once its comfortable, it even starts to invite additional fatty tissue to join the party. And of course the longer its there, the more stubborn this baggage seems to become.
Luckily for me, I knew how to correct my metabolism in a way that would return my physique to its prior form. A couple of years ago, my biohacking approach would have relied primarily upon the practice of intermittent fasting as the metabolic solution. This practice, which Heather and I refer to as interval eating, is at the core of our previous book, The Dubrow Diet . But weve gotten smarter, and our strategies have gotten better andthis is keymore sustainable.
Dont get me wrongfasting is fantastic, and its still one of the primary practices in the Dubrow Keto Fusion Diet (DKFD), but weve identified a superior way to restore metabolic function to its optimal state. This method includes fasting at a shortened duration, that is, fewer hours of feeling hungry, combined with a ketogenic-based eating strategy that essentially acts as a fast extender.
What Ive discovered is that this is the most civilized, sensible, no-suffering-required way to reset and restore your internal biology related to weight and metabolism. So while I panicked at the weight gain, that didnt last long, because, being me, I shifted my focus to fixing the problem. I turned to this powerful fusion strategy to drop what I started referring to as my France 14, and it was indeed the perfect fix, helping me return to my normal weight within twenty-one days.
