What Makes This eBook Unique?
W ay back in the mid-90s, when I was Editor for Mus- cle & Fitne ss, our company spent more than $1 million hiring Simmons Market Research to conduct a national survey of readers and potential readers. They asked the same ques- tion various ways, but it came back loud and clear that building a big chest was among the very top priorities of our audience.
I couldve told them that just by watching the lines back up at the bench-press station every Monday at the gym. It is that obvious.
Over the span of my 14-year tenure, it was my job as Editor to serve up editorial content to meet our readers needs. But far from regurgitating some of the same old workouts and advice time and time again, which littered the other bodybuilding media, so began my efforts to dig deeper to expose our audience to factors they may have never considered, including the fields of exercise science,
kineosiology, and even physics, which go far beyond their own personal experiences. That approach also meant surveying top pro- fessional bodybuilders and powerlifters, researchers, and some of the top experts in their respective fields. Whats more, the gym it- self became my laboratory of sorts to not only observe what folks were doing, but also a place to try out my own developing ideas.
Meaning, what you read on the following pages wont be con-
stricted to a single perspective based on somewhat limited expe- riences in a given field. The content, in fact, is uniquely brought together based on all my experiences and professional education that Id argue you wont find anywhere else. Workouts are based on findings in exercise science; working past a plateau is achieved with the help of powerlifting techniques; the muscle-pump strategies I refer to were devised by combining ideas from a pair of amateur bodybuilders I had previously interviewed; my explanation of some of the common mistakes youre making in the gym are aided by an under- standing of basic physics, and so on.
While my approach is arguably unique, at the end of the day the proof is in the pud- ding. Does it work just OK, very well, or does it optimize your time invested in the gym so youre making the fastest gains possible. Thats the guideline as to how I measure success, both for myself as a trainer and for you, the reader. Because there are better and smarter ways to train in the gym, and theres no reason you shouldnt be taking advantage of them as well.
We take a multi-discipline approach to training that invites contributions from several fields in addition to bodybuilding, including exercise science, powerlifting, and even physics.
