For my glorious grandchildren, that I wish, that they will be part of the first generation of Immortals
The author is constantly surprised by how little politicians and executives seriously care about artificial intelligence (AI), even though it is quite obvious that AI will dramatically change all areas of life in the near future. Therefore, this book aims to enable social and commercial decision-makers, but also any interested reader, to no longer meet AI experts with a lack of knowledge or black-box phobia, but as a savvy customer who knows the real possibilities but also the typical problems and current limitations of AI and proactively helps to determine its use.
Therefore, the explanations are not limited to the fields of application of AI, but in Chaps. the necessary technical prerequisites are also described in detail, so that the reader is also given access to the inner life of AI and thus becomes aware of the possibilities and limitations of AI.
Nevertheless, the manifold application areas of AI are of course illustrated in detail in order to give the AI user or affected person suggestions as to how he can use this new intelligence to make life easier. The fact that the last two chapters also contain a bit of speculation and philosophizing is a real challenge for the topic and hopefully increases the reading pleasure.
In the process of writing this book, unexpected and completely surprising consternation on the subject of artificial intelligence occurred to the author, for which I am very grateful.
For bringing this book to fruition, I have a great many kind people to thank, who motivated me to produce a laymans understandable yet detailed account of the subject. You may forgive me if I mention only a few of you personally in my acknowledgements.
First and foremost among them is Prof. Dr. Med. Gay, who with his always encouraging feedback made it very enjoyable for me to continue writing. I also remember with pleasure the stimulating discourses on singularity with General Music Director E. Calesso. I am very grateful to Mr. Steffen Hfner, M.Sc., who supported me considerably in the description of the techniques. My thanks also go to his wife Bettina Hfner, the Germanist, who meticulously worked through my manuscript for stylistic and orthographic errors. Substantial input was provided by my son Dr. Robert Cisek with his rich practical experience in the chapter on Industry 4.0. My daughter Dr. D. Schnbeck is to thank for the apt title of the book. Last but not least, I would also like to thank my dear wife, who patiently allowed me the time for research and writing and thereby benevolently compensated for the neglect of my domestic duties.
I am also indebted to Springer Verlag. Chief editor Petra Steinmller supervised the creation of the book with caring cordiality, and Ms Sophia Leonhard was always a very reliable and professional support to me as an editor.
The science that is done today is the magic mirror into which we have to look if we want to catch a glimpse of what is to come. (Y. Gasset)
Fritz put the expensive contact lenses back in the case, shooked out his arms and snuggled up to the warming fireplace. He had just completed a virtual flight over Colognes old town as a pigeon. A sharp wind had blown around his beak above the cathedral spires, so that he was still shivering now. He had to smile at himself: despite being fully aware that it had only been a fictional experience in virtual space, his body had reacted psychosomatically as if he had been buzzing around above the Altstadt for real. Maybe the dualists should give this phenomenon some thought, he mused as he rubbed his ice-cold feet.
While Dr. Weishaupt was still desperately trying to free himself from inside the car, a police patrol was already racing up. And Mr. Winterbrot had to apologise profusely to both the police and Dr. Weishaupt. He had forgotten to switch off the sensor system when he had proudly invited his colleague on the board to try out the comfort of his new premium class company car. He had already installed the new Koshimizu seat with its 360 sensors, which assigns a load index from 0 to 265 to each point and, using the code calculated from this, immediately recognises any butt stored in the seat. Dr. Weishaupt had not yet been scanned, of course, and was thus immediately reported to the police as a car thief in the Internet of Things (IoT).
After 40 years Gnter entered his then frequently visited favourite pub The Victoria with fond memories of his student days at the LSE. Nothing had changed. And it was still as crowded as it had been back then. As he tried to squeeze his way to the bar, the charming bartender was already asking him over the heads of the other patrons what he would like to drink, and a little later he already had his beloved Pale Ale in his hand. He was completely amazed at the quick service and secretly admired the amazing overview of the lady behind the counter in the so overflowing pub. Gnter, of course, did not know that when he entered, his face had already been scanned and given a cardinal number. Thats why, as he only now noticed, there was no jostling, because the regulars of course knew that here with the service it was exactly one after the other.
