Why should anyone believe a book on the cloud, written by me, is worth reading?
Let me make my case. Thats what a bio is for, right?
Ive been a programmer for more than 30 years. Yes, 30 years. I know, its hard to believe. Its hard for me to believe, thats for sure!
I graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Science, Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science, Business Administration, Decision Science.
I was a decent student, but I turned out to be a good programmer. Like any job, being a programmer has its ups and downs, but Id highly recommend it as a career. Ive been a dishwasher, janitor, waterbed installer, and I even carried logs around for a while at a mill. Programming is much easier than any of those jobs.
Ive worked in Silicon Valley my entire career, so Ive been able to work at companies like NEC, System Industries, IBM, Convergent, Litton Integrated Automation, Sun Microsystems, PAC Bell, Silicon Graphics, Intuit, Hitachi, and Yahoo, to name just a few.
I was lucky enough to be involved in a successful optical switch startup, Lightera, that was sold to Ciena Corporation.
Ive taught database courses at UCSC and Perl programming for Sun. I enjoyed teaching a lot.
For the last decade, Ive run a blog called HighScalability, which has covered the cloud space in detail since the very beginning. I was a very early user of AWS, and Ive been using it ever since. So I think I have a pretty good idea of how the cloud works at both a theoretical and practical level.
As for writing, Ive written hundreds of articles for my blog. Most of the articles are something like this book, although written for a more technical audience. I try to clearly explain complex topics. So thats what probably gave me the hubris to think I could write this book.
This is not my first book. Over the years, Ive written several books. I dont think Im a great writer, but I think I write well enough to get my point across, and thats the most important skill when writing a book like Explain the Cloud Like Im 10.
Does all this make me qualified to write a beginning book on the cloud? I honestly dont know. I have a feeling nobody is really qualified enough, but I thought a book like this was necessary, so I took my best shot at it.

Do you have cloud induced FOMO (fear of missing out)?
Heres the definition of FOMO: anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on a social media website.
Is that you? When you hear about the cloud, do you get a little anxious because you dont know what the cloud is? Do you feel like technology is passing you by? Do you feel like the future is leaving you behind and youll never catch up?
If you dono wonder! We hear about the cloud all the time these days. And I mean all the time. Every day theres a new cloud-based dating app; a new cloud-based gizmo for your house; a new cloud-based game; or a thousand other new thingsall in the cloud.
The cloud is everywhere! Everything is in the cloud! What does it mean!
Lets slow down. Take a deep breath. Thats good. Take another. Excellent. This book is how you overcome Cloud FOMO.
Ill let you in on a little secret: the cloud is not that hard to understand. Its not. Its just that nobody has taken the time to explain to you what the cloud is. They havent, have they?
Deep down I think this is because they dont understand the cloud either, but I do. Ive been a programmer and writer for over 30 years. Ive been in cloud computing since the very start, and Im here to help you on your journey to understand the cloud. Consider me your tour guide. Ill be with you every step of the way, but not in a creepy way.
I take my time with this book. I go slow and easy, so you can build up an intuition about what the cloud really is, one idea at a time.
When you finish reading, youll understand the cloud. When you hear someone say some new cool thing is in the cloud, youll understand exactly what they mean. Thats a promise.
How do I deliver on that promise? I use lots and lots of pictures. I use lots and lots of examples. Well dive into the secret inner-workings of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Netflix, Facebook Messenger, Amazon Kindle, Apple iCloud, Google Maps, Nest and cloud DVRs.
Youll learn by seeing and understanding; no matter if youre a complete beginner, someone who knows a little and wants to learn more, or a programmer looking to change their career to the cloud.
Im excited. This will be fun. Lets get started!
Everyone talks about the cloud like its some vague, abstract thing, when in fact its a real material thing you can see and touch.
So before we get into the nitty gritty of defining what the cloud is, lets make the cloud real by taking a peek at what it looks like:
Thats a strange image, isnt it? How is this a picture of the cloud everyone talks so much about?
What youre looking at is the interior of a datacenter owned by Facebook. A datacenter is just a giant warehouse-sized building containing lots and lots of computers and other equipment.
How many computers? See those big glowy things in the picture? Each big glowy thing is called a rack and is about the size of a side-by-side refrigerator.
Notice how racks line both sides of the hallway, as far as the eye can see? Row after row of such hallways fill a datacenter.
If you do the math, the number of computers in a datacenter can range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands. Thats a lot of computers!
Lets look a little closer.
Heres what one of the racks looks like:
Each rack holds dozens of pizza-box sized computers that look like:
