I have always enjoyed the serendipitous way friendships are forged and how a past moment can present itself again, sometimes decades later. Thats how this book came about. It grew out of an off-the-cuff comment I made to my good friend Ted Kierscey some twenty-five years ago. In fact, this book would not exist if it werent for Teds passion for 3-D photography. I am grateful to him not only for his friendship, but also for taking my suggestion to put his collection of 3-D photos into a book. What good are stunning historical 3-D photos of Disneyland if you cant share them with those who will enjoy them as much as we have?! And a special thanks to Gayle Herron for encouraging us to make this book.
After we carefully selected the images, we painstakingly had the left and right eye view of each stereo-photograph scanned at 3000 dpi. Once that was done, I had to figure out the best way to convert those digital scans into anaglyph photos for the best presentation in a book format. Once again, a serendipitous moment happened when Patrick Swinnea, an expert in 3-D photography, sent me an email inquiring about this 3-D Disneyland book hed heard me speak about on a podcast. With a simple exchange of emails Patrick graciously came onboard to create the anaglyph photos of Teds collection and share some of his own 3-D photos of Disneyland to fill in a few gaps.
I also want to thank Tom K. Morris, a retired creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, for his friendship and help with this book. Tom spent much of his career creatively overseeing projects at Disneyland. His help in selecting photos and insight into some of the bygone images was invaluable. It was only natural that he write the foreword to this book.
All of those photos were laid out in a stunning presentation by my wife, a talented art director, designer, and ceramicist who is highly experienced in print production. Nancy Levey-Bossert was a joy to work with on this, our fourth book collaboration. It was very easy since our respective offices are just steps apart. She has done another wonderful job in designing this book. Also, thanks to Mark Shoolery for his help.
Thank you to Michele Orwin for her wonderful editing and to Diane Hodges for her expert copy editing. Also, thank you to Jerry Greer for his expertise on the printing of this gorgeous book. It is a true pleasure to work with such terrific professionals.
Last but not least, a heartfelt thanks to my family: Nancy, Sydney, and Marlee; my mother, Virginia, and my sisters, Caroline and Alison. And to Anita, Andrew, and Stephanie for all their love and support. I know that my father, Philip, and my brother, Phil Jr., are with us in spirit and looking down with eternal smiles.
