This volume reports the findings of extensive archival and contextual research into the surviving accounting and business records of some 200 British Industrial Revolution enterprises. These data were collected and analysed during the course of sabbatical leaves taken in 1987, 1991, 1993, and 1996. For our release from teaching and administrative duties, the authors wish to thank John Carroll and Flinders Universities. For the funding of incremental expenses in the United Kingdom, the authors express gratitude to Arthur Andersen & Co. LLP and especially to the firms Cleveland, Ohio partners without whose generous support this project could never have been undertaken. Research support from the KPMG Peat Marwick LLP Accounting Professorship in International Business, endowed by alumni at the firms Cleveland office, was likewise instrumental for accomplishing this project.
A number of chapters herein contained can be sourced back to published work of the coauthors and their collaborators. Since the majority of sourced articles have appeared in British journals, UK spellings and grammatical conventions have been adopted in an effort to achieve a standardisation of presentation. In those chapters new data and expanded discussion are now offered. Further chapters present evidence and analysis not hitherto made available in the accounting literature, especially with regard to accounting developments in the textiles and extractive industries.
