Chapter One: Three Dimes

D anny had three dimes. Three dimes in his pocket during math class. Three dimes in his pocket during music class. Three dimes in his pocket during lunch. Danny didnt play at recess because he wanted to make sure those three dimes stayed in his pocket.

The bell rangBrrrrrring! All of the kids put their homework in their backpacks. Danny pulled all three dimes out of his pocket and set them on his desk. He counted them. OneTwoThree. Dannys friend Sam looked at the three dimes.

What are you going to buy? Sam asked.

Im going to Mr. Candors Candy Shop to buy candy, Danny said.

You cant buy candy with only three dimes! Sam said.

Danny was sad. He had been dreaming all day about the candy he would buy. Jelly beans! Gummy worms! Chocolate drops! Butterscotch! Gumdrops! Cinnamon melts! Danny wanted one of everything.

Mrs. Morris, Dannys teacher, saw his sad face.

Why are you frowning? Mrs. Morris asked Danny.

Three dimes is not enough to buy candy at Mr. Candors Candy Shop, Danny said as he shrugged.

Why, Danny, three dimes is thirty whole cents. With thirty cents you can buy candy. You can buy a few gummy worms or a handful of jelly beans. You cant buy a giant chocolate bar, but you can buy a chocolate drop.

Sam said, I didnt know that!

Danny was so happy. He put all three dimes back in his pocket. He and Sam put their backpacks on and waved to Mrs. Morris. It was candy time!

Chapter Two: Guesses

M r. Candor sat on a stool in his candy shop. He counted kids as they walked into his shop. He guessed which candy each kid wanted.

Hi Maria, Mr. Candor said to a tall girl with long brown hair. Are you here to buy licorice?

How did you know, Mr. Candor? Maria said. I have two quarters. How many licorice whips can I buy?

For fifty cents, you can buy ten sticks of licorice. They each cost a nickel. said Mr. Candor.

Hmm, said Maria. I think Id like to buy a gumball instead. How much does a gumball cost?

A small gumball costs fifty cents. Mr. Candor said.

That costs too much. I think I will buy ten licorice sticks, Maria said.

Maria watched as he picked ten bright red licorice whips out of the jar and put them in a bag.

May I please have your quarters, Maria? Mr. Candor asked.

Maria put two quarters in Mr. Candors hand. Mr. Candor gave Maria the bag of licorice.

Thank you, Mr. Candor, said Maria.

Youre very, very welcome, Mr. Candor replied.

Mr. Candor waved as Maria walked out of the store. He looked at all of the kids and waited for them to choose their candies.

Chapter Three: The Secret

D anny looked at all of the candies in Mr. Candors Candy Shop. He looked at big candies and little candies. He stared at sour candies and sweet candies. He stood in front of the wall of jelly beans and then stood in front of the wall of chocolates. He looked carefully at the price of each candy and then looked at the three dimes in his hand.

Why, hello there! I dont think Ive seen you here before, Mr. Candor said. What can I help you find?

I want to buy some candy, but I dont have very much money, Danny said.

Mr. Candor smiled a very kind smile. He jumped off of his stool and crouched down next to Danny. With a twinkle in his eye, he whispered,

Can I tell you a secret, little boy?

Danny nodded, his eyes getting big.

There are sweet candies in my shop that cost only a penny and gold-leaf candies that cost one hundred dollars. There are candies that are spicy, candies that are bitter, candies that are sour, and candies that are sweet. I sell candies that you can suck on for an hour and candies that will melt on your tongue. I bet I can help you find something that will be tasty that you can buy with just a little bit of money.

I have three dimes. Danny said, pulling his coins out of his pocket. What can I get for thirty cents?

Hmm. Lets see. Mr. Candor tapped his chin and thought. You look like the kind of boy that likes gummy worms and jelly beans.

I am! Danny said. But how many can I get?

For thirty cents, you can buy one gummy worm and twenty jelly beans or you can buy two gummy worms and ten jelly beans.

Danny looked at Mr. Candor. I dont know how I can choose! he said as he thought about all of the different colors and flavors of gummies and jelly beans.

Mr. Candor smiled. You can take as much time as you need.

Chapter Four: Sorting

S am loved to sort. Sam loved to sort his race cars by size. He loved to sort his blocks by shape. He loved to sort rocks by color. He liked it when his stuffed animals were all in a row. When he and Danny walked into Mr. Candors Candy Shop, Sam saw sorted candies.

The jelly beans were sorted by color. There were red jelly beans. There were green jellybeans. There were blue and purple and pink jelly beans. There were yellow jelly beans and orange jelly beans. Sam saw jelly beans in all of the colors of the rainbow.

The chocolates were sorted by size. There were chocolates as big as his fist. There were chocolates as small as a raisin. There were chocolate bars as big as his math book and chocolate bars as small as his thumb.

The gummies were sorted by shape. There were long gummy worms and short gummy bears. There were gummy rings and gummy squares. There were gummies shaped like pineapples and gummies shaped like spiders.

Sam turned around and around and looked at all of the different candies.

How will you choose Danny Sam asked I dont know I like red jelly beans - photo 9

How will you choose, Danny? Sam asked.

I dont know. I like red jelly beans, Danny said.

What if you choose only candies that are red? Sam said.

Danny thought for a second.

But Sam, I love green gummy worms!

Sam looked at the green gummy worms.

You could get a green gummy worm and green jelly beans, Sam said.

I like both of those, Sam, Danny said. But, I also like other candies. I think I might choose a rainbow of colors. Next time, you can choose, and if you only want blue candies, that will be okay with me.
