My Lucky
Sharks Tooth
Usually my mom has to drag me out of bed. But not today! This morning I woke up even before my alarm clock went off, because I was so excited. My class was going on a field trip to the aquarium. I love the aquarium because it has sharks, and sharks are my favorite things in the whole wide world. I jumped out of bed and started to get dressed. I put on my hammerhead shark shirt, my shorts that have sharks swimming all over them, my baseball hat that looks like a sharks head, and my shark socks.

I think Im all set, I said to myself. Oh no, I almost forgot my lucky sharks tooth! I cant go to the aquarium without my lucky sharks tooth. I looked on my nightstand right next to my clock. Thats where I always put the tooth right before I go to sleep, but it wasnt there. I looked on my dresser. It wasnt there, either.

Where could it be? I ran into the bathroom. Since it was so early, my sister, Suzie, wasnt in there hogging it yet. I threw all the dirty clothes out of the hamper one by one, but I still didnt find it. Suzie walked into the bathroom. She took one look at me and started to laugh. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Whats so funny? I asked.

Your outfit, she said, pointing and laughing. Whats wrong with my outfit You look like a dork said Suzie Are you really - photo 5 Whats wrong with my outfit? You look like a dork, said Suzie. Are you really going to wear all of that shark stuff at one time? Yes, I am, and Im even missing something. What? asked Suzie. Shark underwear? Ha-ha, very funny, I said. No, not shark underwear.

Im missing my lucky sharks tooth. Have you seen it? Im not sure. Let me think, said Suzie. Well, could you think fast? I asked. Whats it worth to you? Suzie said, holding up her pinkie for a pinkie swear. Anything, I said.

My class is going to the aquarium today, and I cant go without my lucky sharks tooth. Okay, then how about you do my chores for a week? A week? Are you crazy? You said anything, said Suzie, shoving her pinkie in my face. Do we have a deal or not? I didnt really have a choice. I couldnt go without my lucky sharks tooth, and time was running out. Fine. Deal, I said as we locked pinkies.

Now, where is it? I think I saw it on the desk in the kitchen, said Suzie. You think? I thought you knew for sure. I raced downstairs to the kitchen. Whats the rush? asked my mom. Youre usually not even out of bed by now. Im trying to find my lucky sharks tooth.

Suzie said she thinks its on your desk. My mom walked over to her desk. Yes, honey, its right here. I almost vacuumed it up yesterday by accident because it was lying on the floor. That would have been a disaster! Good thing you saw it, Mom. It must have fallen off your pants.

Make sure you put it on tightly today. You wouldnt want to lose it at the aquarium. Thats for sure. Its my good-luck charm, I said, hooking it on the belt loop of my shorts. Now come sit down and have some breakfast. You need energy for your big day.

I made your favoritepancakes. Yum, I said, patting my stomach. My mom put a pancake down in front of me and went back to the stove to make more for Suzie. I cut the pancake in half I left one half alone and I cut the other half into - photo 6 I cut the pancake in half. I left one half alone, and I cut the other half into strips. I was moving all the pieces around on my plate when Suzie came into the kitchen.

Mom! Freddy is playing with his food! she said. I glared at her. My mom came running over. Freddy, what are you doing? How many times have I told you not to play with your food? But Im trying to make something, Mom, I said. Your food is not an art project. Watch. Watch.

I finished putting the pieces into place. Tada! I said. What is it? asked Suzie. A jellyfish. A what? A jellyfish I said This half is the body and these strips are the tentacles - photo 7 A jellyfish, I said. This half is the body, and these strips are the tentacles.

Very clever, said my mom. I smiled at Suzie. Now eat up. You dont want to miss your bus. Its your big day. Oh, thats right.

Its almost time for the aquarium adventure, my dad said as he walked into the kitchen. I know, I said, shoving pancake into my mouth. I cant wait! Hey, Shark Boy, no seafood, said Suzie. I dont want to see the food in your mouth. Freddy, little bites, please, said my mom. Not shark bites.

I hear they have a new shark exhibit, my dad said. Yeah. Robbie and I looked it up on the computer. Its so cool. I cant wait to hear all about it, said my mom. Maybe well even see some pups, I said.

Puppies? Suzie said, laughing. For your information, Ding-Dong, dogs are not sea creatures. I dont think youll see any puppies today. For your information, baby sharks are called pups. Oh, Suzie mumbled. I didnt know that, said my mom.

Finish up, my little pup. The bus will be here any minute. I gulped down my orange juice, grabbed my shark backpack, and kissed my parents good-bye. Have an awesome time! said my dad. Oh, I will, I said as I pretended to swim toward the front door. This is going to be the best day ever!

Mermaid
As soon as we all got to school, our teacher, Mrs.

Wushy, said, We have to get on the bus for our field trip to the aquarium right now. The aquarium is about an hour away, and we want to spend the whole day there since there is so much to see. Cool, said Max. We dont have to learn anything today. Oh, you will be learning a lot, Mrs. Wushy said, smiling.

Just not in the classroom. We all piled onto the bus. My best friend, Robbie, sat down next to me. Of course, Max, the biggest bully in the whole first grade, sat down right in front of us. Why does he always have to sit near us? I whispered to Robbie. I dont know, said Robbie.

Dont worry about it. Lets talk about the trip. What are you excited to see? I cant wait to see a mermaid, said Chloe. Max turned around in his seat. What did you say? I said I cant wait to see a mermaid. Max burst out laughing.

HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA! Stop laughing at me, said Chloe. Whats so funny? Mermaids are not real, said Max. Yes, they are! said Chloe with her hands on her hips. No, theyre not, said Max, still snickering. The Little Mermaid is real and she has beautiful red hair just like mine said - photo 9 The Little Mermaid is real, and she has beautiful red hair just like mine, said Chloe, tossing her fiery red curls in Maxs direction. My friend Jessie was sitting in the seat across from me.

She leaned over and whispered, Does she really think shes a princess? We both started giggling. Well, Prissy Princess, youre wrong! shouted Max. Just then Mrs. Wushy came over to us. What is going on back here? Max, you may not shout on the bus. If you dont believe me, then ask Mrs.
