Foreword
The first time I met a Burmese, hewas presiding over an art gallery. I was there to view paintingsand sketches wonderfully rendered by the daughter of a friend, butthe true work of art that immediately caught my eye was the smallbrown cat curled up on the end of the sofa.
I always cringe a little when I describe aBurmese as brown, or hear someone use that ordinary word for suchan extraordinary cat. The short, tight coat of the Burmese is arippling canvas of complimentary shades of brown, with elegantpoints of emphasis at the base of the ears and on the muzzle.
Of course, thats just on the sable variety.A champagne Burmese is equally stunning in subtle cream tonesdarkening to mocha in all the right places. To call such cats justbrown or beige doesnt do them justice.
And yet, paradoxically, the first Burmese Imet was a little male named Coco, and he was... well...brown. He was indeed the gallery cat, a gift to the owner from acattery-owning acquaintance. Coco had a pronounced under bite and akink in his tail and was thus dubbed pet quality.
I thought the little knob on his tail andhis tiny pearly fangs were adorable, and hardly anything Id call adefect. That is, however, the meaning of pet quality. The catsdo not accurately represent the breed standard to a degree suitableto be part of a breeding program, and so theyre sold or in thiscase given away to good homes.
Coco shared the house with three other cats;one he adored and two he bullied so shamelessly they had to liveupstairs. This regal personage presided over his realm with lordlycalm, gazing placidly out at the world through stunning amber eyeswith an expression that plainly said, Mine, all mine.
In discussions with the gallery owner I wasimpressed with her descriptions of the breeds level ofintelligence and extremely companionable nature. Since that time Ihave known other Burmese cats and had the privilege of living withone.
Burmese cats are, as Coco proved, ratherexecutive minded when it comes to running the household, but theyare also affectionate and enjoy being with their humans as much aspossible.
The breed holds a unique position amongfelines of Oriental origin. Although the more commanding anddramatic Siamese once overshadowed the breed, the Burmese has morethan come into its own and is highly valued as a beloved anddevoted companion.
