Ready to draw Garfield and his friends? First, youll need some simple drawing tools. Start with a pencil, an eraser (so you can fix any mistakes), a pencil sharpener, and paper. When youre finished with your drawing, you can color it with crayons, colored pencils, or markers (be sure to have lots of orange).
REMEMBER TO GET A SNACK TOO... DRAWING CAN WORK UP AN APPETITE!
Getting Started
QUICK TIP
Relax, stay loose, and let your arm and hand move freely as you draw.
Garfield s Handsome Face
Lets start with a front view of Garfields face. Grab a pencil and an eraser, and follow these simple steps.
Start with a basic oval shape. Draw a vertical line dividing the oval in half. Then draw a horizontal line a quarter of the way up so it looks as if its going around the oval. These are your guidelines.
Draw a circle for Garfields nose where the vertical and horizontal lines cross. Then draw two ovals for his eyes. Give him a nice big smile. The ends of the smile should reach halfway up his eyes.
Finish the ears, and add a line to give Garfield his famous double chin. Add his whiskers, eyelids, and two dots for his pupils.
Clean up the guidelines with an eraser, and add the final stripes and dots.
Front View
I'm not just another pretty face!
As with the front view, start with a large oval. Add the horizontal and vertical lines off-center (toward the side you want Garfield to face).
Add the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. This time, notice that everything is angled toward the side.
Fill out Garfields face, and note how the chin and cheek lines overlap in the same direction.
Clean up the guidelines with an eraser, and add the final stripes and dots. You see more stripes on the side of the head thats turned toward you.
Side View
Garfield s Body
Now that weve mastered Garfields face, lets draw his body. Again, use a pencil and an eraser (and dont worry about mistakes).
Start with two ovals. Divide the head oval with horizontal and vertical lines as before. Make the body oval flat on the bottom.
Place circles along the bottom line of the body to position the feet and tail.
Fill in the paws, and round out the body to give Garfield his famous pear shape. Fill in facial details as before.
Clean up the guidelines, and add Garfields stripes.
