That was the quiet promise my dad offered when I worked for him at the construction company he owned with a past coworker and friend. Before that, I never would have thought it would be possible for me, a kid who barely graduated high school, to own my own business. You have to know that about me to understand how great it felt to work hard every day knowing that there was a possibility that one day this business could be mine. Even though I was working hard every day, I really enjoyed the work we were doing for our customers.
Every morning I would show up to the office and sit down with my construction crews to plan out the days work. I loved those morningscoffee in hand, of courseand the long days were worth every second. I could go to bed at night knowing that I was another day closer to having and owning my own business that would support my young family.
The feeling was way different than what Id gotten from the work Id done in the past. Right out of high school, I spent some time working for a cable company first and then for Quad Graphicsa major printing company that published some big magazines. I did that for about nine months, and I thought it was my ticket to success. The printing company was a good enough job that I thought would turn into a long - term career, but I quickly discovered I absolutely hated it. I couldnt spend my whole life feeling trapped inside a factory for twelve hours a day. That type of career was definitely not for me. I had to make a change, but what else could I do? Fortunately, an unexpected chain of events opened new doors.
