Important Information
This book was written as an educational tool to enable you to better understand, assess, and choose the best course of treatment when chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, environmental illness, or Lyme disease strikes. It will also show you how to prevent these conditions from striking in the first place. It could save your life.
In reading this book, please remember that it is not another catalog of mainstream medicines conventional treatments and drugs that are used to treat these diseases. It is about effective alternative approaches to these conditions approaches generally not understood and, at this time, not endorsed by the medical establishment. Therefore, we urge you to discuss the treatments described herein with your doctor. If your doctor is open-minded, you may actually educate him or her. We are gratified to know that many of our readers have found their physicians to be open to new ideas.
Use this book wisely. Because many of the treatments it describes are, by definition, alternative, they have not been investigated, approved, or endorsed by any government or regulatory agency. National, state, and local laws may vary regarding the use and application of many of the treatments that are discussed. Accordingly, this book should not be substituted for the advice and care of a physician or other licensed health-care professional. Pregnant women, in particular, are urged to consult with a physician before commencing any therapy. Ultimately, you, the reader, must take responsibility for your health and how you use the information in this book.

introduction
You Dont Have to Endure Chronic Fatigue
If you have chronic fatigue syndrome or one of its close relatives fibromyalgia, environmental illness, and Lyme disease you most likely have experienced years of frustration trying to find relief from your puzzling assortment of symptoms. You may have spent years just trying to find a doctor who could find out what was wrong with you. In the process, you probably encountered many medical professionals who dismissed your complaints as neurotic imaginings.
If you were fortunate enough to find a physician who acknowledged your problem by giving it a name, a name was likely all you got. Conventional medicine is usually baffled by these disorders and can only offer drugs to temporarily ease some of the symptoms: painkillers for the muscle pain of CFS and fibromyalgia; antihistamines for the allergies of CFS and environmental illness; antibiotics for Lyme disease; antidepressants for the mood disorders of all four. But such conventional drugs produce their temporary relief only at the cost of considerable side effects and toxicity.
It is not only conventional physicians who have failed you. It is the whole conventional medical establishment, which has for more than a decade debated whether CFS even exists and, if it does, arguing over the number and nature of symptoms that qualify a person for the distinction of having CFS. This has been the pursuit of the U.S. governments Centers for Disease Control whose accomplishments, after more than ten years of investigating CFS, consist of the development of formal diagnosis criteria.
But they are no closer to discovering what causes CFS (or how to treat it) than they were in the mid-1980s, when the outbreak in Incline Village, Nevada, first drew their attention to what would become an epidemic. Conventional medical research seems, as it is with most illnesses, capable only of focusing on the search for that single cause that will then yield the mythical magic bullet cure. That is not the way alternative medicine goes about dealing with a complex illness like chronic fatigue.
The good news is that you dont have to wait for the magic bullet (which will never arrive). Alternative medicine has practical solutions for you now. Physicians of alternative medicine know that illness is multifactorial. Particularly in the case of such complex disorders as CFS, fibromyalgia, and environmental illness, no one cause is responsible. Multiple imbalances and deficiencies combine to produce the breakdown of the body. And all three of these disorders can be severely complicated by Lyme disease, a condition that has become pandemic in this country and still, for the most part, goes undetected, because its many symptoms are often mistakenly identified as other illnesses.
Knowing this, alternative medicine physicians have set about to systematically identify these factors from viruses and yeast overgrowth to heavy metal toxicity and nutritional deficits through precisely targeted, nontoxic tests. Once the underlying factors have been pinpointed, a treatment plan can be designed to address each one. Instead of treating symptoms, which can only produce temporary relief at best, alternative medicine goes to the root causes and so can provide a real and lasting solution to your health problems.
In addition, alternative physicians know that if you want good results, you must always consider the body as a whole. For example, prescribing supplements for patients with severe nutritional deficiencies without first addressing their digestive problems will yield little or no results because until the patients faulty digestion is addressed and resolved, nutrients cannot be properly absorbed. All the systems of the body are interrelated; that is why holistic medical treatment is such an effective model. Holistic medicine also knows that no two people, even with the same illness, will require the same treatment. Cookbook prescriptions have no place in the world of alternative medicine.
