This Nuts and Bolts of Building a Successful, Self-Sustaining Company
In Grind, Michael J. McFall, co-CEO of BIGGBY COFFEE, will help you identify the common sense strategies needed to turn your start-up idea into a positive-cash flow business. Dispensing with the notion that potential business owners require a formal education, he outlines several fundamental areas of importance, keying in on hustle, self-evaluation, and commitment.
Having risen from a minimum-wage barista to build a company with over 250 stores in 9 states, McFall writes with the authority of hard-fought achievement. In addition to his calls for personal due diligence, he goes into detail about crucial business drivers, speaking from his personal and professional experience and including examples of hits and misses along the way.
McFall avoids sophisticated descriptions of processes and theories, retaining a down-to-earth approachability throughout the book. Filled with anecdotes, ideas, and calls to action, Grind provides the insight and expertise aspiring business owners require to reach profitability.

FOREWORD

FIRST I WOULD LIKE to tell the story of my thirteen-year working relationship - photo 5

FIRST, I WOULD LIKE to tell the story of my thirteen-year working relationship with the author, Mike McFall. When we first talked, I worked for Fred Deluca, cofounder of the Subway franchising organization. At that time, I had just created Franchise Brands, LLC as a vehicle for Fred and his partner to invest in concepts that we could grow through the franchise structure we had developed for Subway restaurants.

My work with the company started when I was a law student and took a summer position to negotiate leases for new Subway locations. At that time, there were 700 Subway sandwich shops. Over the years, my responsibilities in the organization grew to include all aspects of franchise development, I was a member of Freds Leadership Team, and we had created what we pridefully called a franchise development machine through which we added 1,500 locations in more than 100 countries per year.

Now with 27,000 Subway restaurants worldwide, during company strategic planning sessions Fred and I agreed it was time for the company to offer diversified investment opportunities for its stakeholders and for a new challenge for me since the development machine was running smoothly. Though the 20 or so years I spent developing the Subway franchise were exhilarating and I would not trade them for anything in the world, I accepted his offer and created an acquisition and investment organization that later became known as Franchise Brands.
