Passing notes was an art form. Just folding them required an intense concentration unlike any other. From the giddy first crush to the heart-rending breakup, each roller coaster love affair was brokered and broken through these passionate notes. Getting the guts to pass a note to someone that you had a crush on took incredible courage. Watching them read it, seeing their expression wow! It was excruciating and wonderful at the same time, being so young and so in love, and wanting so desperately for the relationship to work out. You just knew that youd fall in love, get married, and live happily ever after, all at age twelve.
For up to a week its sheer bliss. And then the heartache of the breakup. Getting a breakup note was the worst thing that could possibly happen, ever. The notes in this book were passed among me, my friend Charles, and the many girls I loved during my junior high school years. Theyre a funny and sometimes poignant snapshot of the tortured soul of the junior high school romantic. Most of us are probably never going to wear our hearts on our sleeves as willingly today as we did back then.
