Creative Thinking About Creative Thinking

I find that statement especially interesting when you consider how Einstein described his creative process in a famous letter to French mathematician Jacques Hadamard:
Picture 3Picture 4
The words or the language, as they are written or spoken, do not seem to play any role in my mechanisms of thought. The physical entities which seem to serve as elements in thought are certain signs and more or less clear images [emphasis mine] which can be voluntarily reproduced or combined.5
More or less clear images." Could it be that these signs and images of which Einstein speaks are less clear initially, and become more clear only as the subconscious makes more concrete and specific analogous matches of the feelings and images that are subconsciously experienced?
Gordon's research leads me to believe that at some level, the subconscious is essentially a gigantic picture- (and feeling-) matching machine. Why does the subconscious "choose" to match on the basis of imagery? Because, as Gordon points out, an image can theoretically carry so many more useful (and diverse) bits of information than a single word.
So what might this research imply for the creative business person in search of that breakthrough idea or strategy? Here are a few suggestions:
Once you've immersed yourself in the specifics of a problem, allow yourself, and your subconscious, the time you need to allow fuzzy imagery to evoke some interesting subconscious connections.
Expect yourself to get better at fuzzy thinking. As you begin feeling comfortable using your subconscious for creative problem solving, you'll discover that like a well-exercised muscle, your subconscious problemsolving abilities will become much stronger and more reliable over time.A good way to build your intuitive problem-solving skills is to start giving your subconscious nightly "assignments" before going to bed. When you wake up in the morning, write down whatever happens to be on your mind. Often, these "as-you're-waking" thoughts will hold the answer-either literally or metaphorically-to the problem you posed the night before.
Practice fuzzing up your world daily. A well-known painting technique artists use is to squint their eyes at their paintings. This blurred view allows them to get both an overall feel for the painting and a better sense of the aesthetic balance among shapes, colors, tones, and shadows.Practice looking at the world through blurred vision, and see what new insights-in terms of both form and feeling-you discover.
Look for visual matches and metaphors, intuitions, and feelings in the world around you. What bird does that lamp look like? Why did

The tremendous interest in our trade show promotion, coupled with the successful follow-up media coverage, confirmed something I suspected all along: People like to fantasize about having what other people have and doing what other people do. It can be a powerful human motivator. It can be a lot of fun. It can also be the source of breakthrough ideas.
