C hances are you are going to gain weight today. In this country, if you are not working at losing weight or maintaining your current weight, you are almost guaranteed to gain weight. Why? We live in an obesogenic society that promotes gaining weight and isnt conducive to weight loss. Food portions are out of controlwhat I call portion distortion. Everything from sandwiches and muffins to bags of chips are supersized. Realistically, who trims down their sandwich or counts out a proper portion of crackers? The problem is weve lost sight of what a proper portion looks like.

Today, big is the norm; we expect jumbo portions all the time. Advances in food technology are making us fatter, too. Refined foods may look and taste delicious, but modern processing routinely strips away the nutrients that make food filling, especially fiber. Converting potatoes to potato flakes, apples to juice, and wheat to white bread makes it convenient to enjoy them, but the truth is that processed foods dont satisfy hunger for very long. And this is why we have become a nation of overeaters. In America, if you are hungry, you are in luck, because food is omnipresent.

You can grab a bite of almost anything anywhere and any time of the day. Gas stations and drugstores sell food, airports have vast food courts, and many office buildings have a cafeteria or vending machines. Its ironic that the abundance and close proximity of processed food is what keeps us perpetually hungry. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 68 percent of our adult population is either overweight or obese. Thats a scary statistic, but you dont have be a part of it. As a registered dietitian who specializes in weight loss, I know you can lose weight and keep it off while eating deliciously and healthfully, without hunger.

To prove it, I created the Miracle Carb Diet, which is contrary to any other diet out there. Fifteen years ago, while working as a clinical dietitian, I developed separate diets for diabetic and cardiovascular patients and discovered an unexpected benefit: Everyone improved their medical condition, but they lost weight as well. So much revolutionary research has been done since I wrote The F-Factor Diet in 2006, not only validating but greatly advancing those early theories I had about fiber based on the experiences of my own patients. Multiply all your negative thoughts and feelings about your weight in a given day by a week, by a month, by every year that you have been unhappy about your body, and then think of how much time that all adds up to. Now envision yourself filling those hours happily playing with your kids, pursuing a hobby, furthering your career, or socializing. Even a single hour spent dwelling on your weight is an hour stolen from a better life.

Imagine how liberating its going to be when you can forever check lose weight off your lifes to-do list.

WHAT IS THE F-FACTOR WAY?
