ADLER, ALFRED (1870-1937): Austrian psychiatrist, originally a follower of S. Freud, and the founder of the movement known as Individual Psychology. His last years were spent in the U. S. A.

AGE REGRESSION: The phenomenon of returning in ones mind as well as in ones behavior to some earlier stage of life, with amnesia of the entire subsequent period. This can occur spontaneously, for instance in senile people; or it can be induced by hypnosis almost at any age.
Hypnotic age regression is disorientation with relation to person, place or time (M. V. Kline, in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, 1953).

ALCOHOLISM: Addiction to alcoholic beverages. Hypnotism and suggestion have been used to control or overcome it.
If he discovers that alcohol relieves his tension, the patient is likely to become an alcoholic (S. J. Van Pelt in the Medical Hypnosis Handbook ) .
Comparison of data obtained in three different types of treatment of alcoholism shows that the most desirable affect is reached by means of hypnotherapy, by itself or in combination with apomorphine....
The therapeutic effects, in cases of alcoholism, is increased in proportion to the depth of the hypnotic state attained, from which follows the advantage of inducing, whenever possible, the somnambulistic state....
